Hydraulic connections

Stopped to look at this birch last week, just because of the unusual growth. 

 

The photos aren't great but the interconnected 'ribs' around the stem are unusual and very pronounced. 

 

I don't think this is reaction wood due to dynamic stresses or internal cracks, but rather a development due to historic changes in the rooting environment.
