New brake shoes

I renewed the brake shoes on my ifor 14ft flatbed a couple off weeks ago.I slackened off the tension on the cables a bit because i thought i would need to with the new shoes.They don't seem to be braking when needed,does anybody know the correct way to adjust them or is it just trial and error?:confused1:

Slacken the cables right off then adjust using the drum adjuster, then tighten the cables up till there's a good bit of lift before the hand brake bites...about halfway up.

 

It's important that the drums are adjusted first

have they gor ajusters in the hub? better to slacken that before the cable.

 

 

 

jack wheels up with breaks off and tow bar (over run)pulled out

 

tighten breaks till they start to rub then slacken 1 notch (so they dont rub)

 

do this on all wheels then try

 

check for heat also after a run :001_smile:

Ensure brakes are off and coupling is fully out, find adjuster on backplate and wind in until wheel will not rotate forwards, this ensures that both top and bottom shoe is correctly adjusted. Then back off the adjuster will you can just hear some "drag", if the adjuster is via a bolt head, a light tap with a hammer will help to "settle" things.

 

Then adjust the cable lengths to suit so that all compensators are level. Then activate the handbrake a couple of times - then re-adjust. If you have a big energy store on the handbrake, then your lever should only come up half way.

 

In the future just adjust at the drums, leave the cables alone. Remember that the height of the handbrake is a visual indicator on how good the brakes are. If the handle comes right up - they need attention.

did you put the brake shoes in the right way they have a leading edge ?
Think so,checked on other axle but there seems to be only one way they go in.Yes the adjuster on the drum is a bolt.Think i've got it now.Is it easy to tell if cables are ok or not,one of my tippers went for a service at the main dealer and came back with a rather large invoice stuck to it!

They fitted new cables.
