New tennants on the estate have got a hunter herald 6 double sided stove but you cannot get any logs in it as the grate is to high and the baffle plate is to low there is only about 4 inches. Can you get rid of the ash pan and grate and buy something to hold the logs in?

I don't know the particular stove but woodburners don't tend to use a grate; they burn on a bed, the grate being for coal burning. Can you remove the grate and burn on the bed? You'll need a bed of ash to start with or, officially, fire sand.

Or have I completely got the wrong end of the stick?

You are both right. But can i buy something that goes in front to hold the logs in. Also it is a double doors version so you need to lock onto something with the handle. I can't find anything on the net:001_smile:

Interesting you say about burning on the bed. I have got two woodburners and they both have ash pans with a grate i want to take them out but it is how to hold the logs in. But if i take them out i can get a lot more wood in:thumbup:

Sounds like you need a blacksmith and some iron. The logs are usually held in place with a small removeable vertical plate that tucks inside the vertical 'flanges' of the burner's front: you need one!

David - we run the Hunter Herald 8 for all our home heating and bought a "wood-burning conversion kit" for £30 or so from Stoves, wood burning stoves, woodburning stove, multifuel stoves UK when we bought the unit. It consits of a replacement front section and some fire bricks. I haven't fitted it yet cos we can fit plenty of logs on, switch over to a bit of smokeless for night we we feel like it and the grate/ashpan make cleaning it out easier!
