Do you not think that basic advancing in the tree should be mastered before getting dependant on throwlines? Maybe I'm biased, I climbed for 7-8 years or so before I ever got a throwline. Now I'm quite good with the throwline so I reckon I have the best of both worlds.

Despite my crap throwing when I worked for Rupe for a day I am usually pretty good with just advancing my climbing rope and I agree with Rupe about learning this technique before using a throw line, which I also never used for around the same number of years as him, actually I rarely use a throw line now, when I do climb a tree that warrants a throw line I break out the big shot.
