I wonder if you could put a couple of slice's in a tree stump and burn it out in the same way as the candle

i believe nice dry softwoods

ie pine larch are best as that sappy gluey stuff burns well:thumbup:

Told a Portuguese friend about it today...he says the old boys round here have been doing that to stumps for a while. Seems the harder the wood, the longer the burn, seasoning doesn't seem to enter the equation.

Certainly seems it was the 'sappy, gluey stuff' that got the one pictured going, Bob.

It was fairly 'new' pine, but didn't spit half as much as I was expecting, I reckon an old wheel rim, up-turned. would serve as a holder if one was concerned about embers falling etc. Incidentally, after about 2 hours of burning outside, I picked the thing up whilst wearing welding gloves, chucked it in the fire place and it continued burning 'till the following afternoon!
