I'd also recommend Collins Tree Guide by David More and Owen Johnson. However, there are no photos in this book but excellent colour drawings. I'd also recommend Tree Recognition: A Pocket Manual by Ian Richardson and Rowena Gale if you want something smaller for when your out and about. However, this one also doesn't have photos but fairly straight forward line drawings.

The Collins Tree Guide for me too. The full size book (slightly bigger than A4 & 1 1/2" thick) in the 'office' & the half size book (identical content) travels with me.

aye, i'll add collins too.

if you are doing city stuff where there is alot of exotic stuff the R.H.S guide to plants, shrubs and tree is excellent. i know most abourists wont be interested in the plants bit but the coverage of exotic stuff is good.

i wish someone would do a good (free) website of i.d. with related pest and dissease and hook it all up together for cross refrencing...

Trees in Britain Europe and North America by Roger Phillips published by MacMillan is pretty useful (not as good as his Mushroom book). It has has helpful close-up photographs of foliage, fruiting bodies etc.
