I am also confident they are wrong ... I used to own petrol stations and all invoices from CPL or other coal and log suppliers charged 17.5% (as it was then) and we retailed at 5%.

This is correct, its only 5% when you are going to be using the wood as fuel for yourself, other wise you are processing a product as a buisness and then selling the timber as logs so it is, cant remember where but its on the hmrc website. explains it all.

On the link above 7.1.2 and 7.1.3 is the description of wood and firewood and the vat rares to be applied.

Thanks for the info and links, it looks like my supplier has got it wrong after all! Any way it's up to him to sort it out I guess.
