Flockulate ! ( Lime the soil to make it 'crumb more ) I often find a good layer of rotted woodchip around the planting encourages earthworms under the moister soil which will aereate the clay -plus retains moisture in summer when the clay loves to crack and expose root fibres to drying out K

thanks for all the reply's. the willow will be at least 25 meters from any houses and on a bank so roots wont be an issue.

 

its a management company the works being done for, so hopefully they should keep up with the maintenance. it'll be in the management plan they want us to keep on top of.

I probably should of added they are wanting the trees for some structure to a bank side between 2 rows of houses 65 or so meters apart, hence the groups of 3 willows. hopefully they will keep up the maintenance, that's what i'm basing my suggestions on.
