Carved this Butterfly from a ring of Oak, its 24 ins across the wingspan, the customer wanted it rustic to put against an old tree stump they have in their garden.

Not a carving revelation but i had a couple of orders from passers by as i was carving it.

Happy New Year to you all

Nice bit of work there. Well done. Are the antennas delicate using cross cut log slices?

What's the table/clamp underneath it? Always looking for more kit to spend my money on !

Sent from my GT-I9195 using Arbtalk mobile app

Thanks very much :thumbup1:

The antennas i left full thickness to the very end, then cut them to about an inch thickness before finishing them off with a finger sander.

The table underneath is a Draper 1.5 ton hydraulic motorbike scissor jack, with a 1 metre lift via a foot pedal. I welded a chequered plate to the top with a 2 inch self tapping bolt vertically welded from the centre. I drill a small hole in my logs then self tap them onto the bolt/plate to hold them while i carve. works well for me and gives me the height i need for the smaller carvings.

Nice one Ian. Did you cut the wings right through on the angle to relieve shrinkage/splitting?

I use a sacrificial slab of plywood between the carving and the welded plate, save a lot of sharpening ;) ;)

Thanks Ian

Yes the wings are cut through to within an inch of the body, it's the antennas I'm worried about, I soaked them in oil to try and stop any cracks :blushing:

I use a piece of kitchen work top, chip wood, doesn't last but does the job :thumbup1:
