Ok cheers. Am I right in assuming that generally weakening compression is most likely to be knackered rings, and the pot is only going to get wrecked if the saw is pushed beyond the point it should have been repaired?

I'm no expert , spuds the man he rebuilt one of my 560's and ported it and it's got stronger compression than ever with just a new bottom end piston and rings.. compression is now so strong it destroys a starter recoil unit every 6 months!

It is very possible that the cylinder is OK and you just need a new piston. What most fail to recognise is that the Nikasil plating on the bore is bullet proof and tends to only score if it comes in to contact with hardened steel such as circlips and piston rings.
