I have tried running with a flue stat. Problem is that the the flue temp is only about 50C when operating. I have a log gassification boiler. Tried to cut the pump out when fire out.. as the main water body is >80C it 'reheats' the boiler!! So doesnt work. The 3way laddomat is essential in the whole system though.

Running with only a 50 deg flue temp is a recipe for incomplete combustion and tar production surely.

I would have thought your flue stat should be set well above that.

That's right It means either incomplete combustion or the heat exchanger is dropping the temperature too much ( e.g. by circulating water that is too cold). Most of the water formed in combustion and the moisture in the original wood will be condensing and running back down the flue with much of the other products of incomplete combustion in tow.

For most conventional wood boilers the flue gases should be leaving the top of the stack above boiling point.

I might be talking through my arse here but I have a a charnwood fire and and boiler. Running hot water and heating. Slightly different to the Esse I know. No separate water store though.

I fitted it myself, typical gravity fed system with pump near the fire which is turned on and off manually. I've never had any trouble with cold water and the only specialist valve I remember fitting was basically a three way reducer. Probably not it's correct name. I had to buy it from charnwood. If you have a gravity fed system there shouldn't be much to go wrong.
