prunus reduction

hi guys just a quickie

tried to twist customers arm to take down a mature prunus instead of reducing/pruning insize because of honey fungus.

(only trying to save them money in the long term)

anyway tree has visible fruiting body but no major signs of dyback just yet.

 

How long could this tree hang in there for ?

and what would recovery from a 25% reduction be like considering this invasion of honey fungus ?

 

customer was wanting to keep tree for as long as poss but undertstand the inevitable.

will my 25% reduc be the final nail in this trees coffin ?

If you do presuade him to remove, you want to get the stump out aswell, less dead wood to feed on!

whats my reduc going to do ? to a already dying / under attack tree ?

i did exsplain the recovery rate could be low but cust wants to take the risk.

at the end of the day theres going to be more than 1 job done with this tree if you now what i mean

Reducing the tree is only going to stress the tree more making it easier for the Amallaria.

 

How vigorous has the tree been this year?

 

Why does he want work done on the tree? To try to prelong it or for more light etc?

You've explained the risks and the customer has made their own choice despite that. Do the reduction with a clear conscience and then if the fell needs to be done, quote for it the same way,

It's how the customer wants to play it, and you either walk away from the job(s) or start your saw

Have you pointed out the risks to other trees of leaving the honey fungus to thrive? Relative of mine asked the RHS how to 'organically' deal with it. Answer; remove all soil 30' in all directions to a depth of 6'! - And there's no guarantee that will work. By leaving said host he's probably only storing up trouble for the future. A cherry/plum with HF? It's a goner.
