Guide rails for Alaskan et Chilaskan milling

I've just bought a couple of f clamps and the one with a 70mm throat is really strong so I think that will work for doing the first cut.

However, that won't work for doing the vertical cut with the mini mill ....due to there not being enough clearance between the side of the f clamp and the chain.

cheers, steve

Sorry for any confusion, I use a ladder as normal for the horizontal cuts with the Alaskan, the alloy box section is only to replace the plank when doing vertical cuts with the mini mill and by fixing the T bolt bar to it I'll be able to make sliding right angle type brackets in order to be able to fix it to the end any length of log therefore avoiding screwing onto the surface.

As my piece of extrusion is 4 meters long I mostly won't need to extend it, but as I see that that's what you're looking into I wouldn't see a problem with locking 2 pieces of 6 x 2" box together with a well finished bit of wood ,or metal, that's a nice sliding fit inside them and held in place with some screws on the 2" face.

Having said all that, if your going to the bother of making a purpose built jig it might be an idea to start from scratch and make it long enough for most of the jobs you do, in my case 4m is about the max for my roof rack !! Cheers,

Not seen those rods before - have bought some to try.

Yeah, saw them mentioned on here some time ago and when I watched the HTS 2000 on youtube vids I bought some rods straight away.

I've been welding / brazing all sorts of things most of my life but this low temp system has been a revelation for non ferrous materials and has let me repair many things that I would previously have considered too delicate or scrap, not only that, but it gives me another option when it comes to repairing stripped threads, which I do a lot of and can be awkward.

My only tip would be that for best results...as always the key is cleanliness.

I'll look forward to seeing the stuff your developing at some point in the future.

I don't know if you spotted this stuff in a recommendation on a post just last week talking about useful things..........I bought it as soon as I saw it and I've no doubt that many more things will be successfully repaired .....the power of Arbtalk !!!! Cheers

A few pictures of my setup (using an Aluminium ladder). Mounted via brackets on the end of the log. Very easy and quick setup, and easy to line up with log centre.

Note that you can slide in the bracket after placing the ladder on the log. Also: no modification/holes need to be made to the ladder.

We are working on our own first cut system for the Alaskan which will also run a mini mill type set up.

We have a prototype - taking it from a working prototype into production will take us many months though...

Looking forward to that :) and hope that it's going to be possible to buy it from outside the UK.
