Sealing the ends

Hi all,

I've got some lumps of cedar and a bit of yew I've had knocking around for a couple of years and was planning to attack them with the Chinese Alaskan now it's not so hot and I was just wondering what best to do regards sealing the ends, do I just paint the ends as they are or do I take a slice off so the cuts are fresh.

I was planning on using pva but have heard paint can be used too, which is best pls.

No need. Yew and cedar are extremely unlikely to end check or split. Infact, I've never seen it in either species, and I've cut a lot of both. I suppose it may depend on which species of cedar it is. As a rule, never consider end sealing softwood (and yew is a softwood) and if hardwoods are cut at the correct time of year (winter) and correctly stored (under cover, away from sun, with reasonable but not excessive air flow) there is no need to end seal.

Just checked over my Yew and Cedar of (Leb) i milled last year with out sealing the ends and all fine. Sticker stored under cover out of the sun with good air flow seem to work. I used to seal the ends on Oak but don't bother as found if it wants to split it will sealed or not. As Big J said winter best for the hard woods. Have fun.
