Iv recently just bought a SJ3. Iv noticed it's hard to get a happy medium descending, it's either uncontrolled and fast or to slow.. I used a zigzag before and I was able to jump and descend onto limbs quite safely but I'm really struggling with the SJ3... can anyone help? Can I change anything?

Yes. I've not used SJ3 but the wooden brake is used to control the descent. So to descend you release the cam with the metal lever and control with the wooden brake. It just takes practice to get used to.

Yeah but it's very hard to get a happy controlled speed.. there's not much in the thumb pressure between fast and slow.

The ZigZag takes minutes to master where as the Spiderjack 2.1 i am used to is a different beast altogether and after handling the SJ3 it works on the same principle. This takes longer to master but just like driving a car it is a balance between the trigger and wooden brake.Keep at it.Such a great device.
