  1. Thanks and will look into Popular and Eucalyptus... do you have any pointers I could start with? Also, please could you explain what you mean my using 10" dia lumps as sound interesting?
  2. Jeez...Thanks for this, there's some great info and guess I should have done a search before attempting to reinvent the wheel!😏 Still, be good to find a definitive resource on planning and managing a small bit of land (around 2 acres) to maximise growing trees for fuel. Know it's early days from reading your post, but what did you do in the end?
  3. Great article. Thanks for the link 👌
  4. You have instantly put my mind at rest … Thanks
  5. Thank you for your feedback. About to install a log gasification biomass heating system and the burner takes logs up to half a metre long, so will need to up my game when it comes to chopping/storing/seasoning timber as previously chopped wood for log burners. Started storing the large logs in the holzhausen style to facilitate drying before then moving into a woodshed. As the willow grows on river banks at my property, it's very wet 😏 and have been stripping the bark off split logs but are now questioning if this is worthwhile doing, as splitting the logs should be enough to facilitate seasoning to less than 20% water content in 2 years? (I'd rather forego the extra work of bark stipping unless it’s really necessary)
  6. Yep, learn't and keep on learning that the hard way😆😏

  8. So there is no need to strip bark of a split log as splitting is enough to facilitate seasoning?
  9. Felling willow for storing prior to chopping for logs. My question is how much bark do I need to strip off to facilitate the seasoning process? (the Willow is extremely wet as they are growing by a riverbank)
  10. Yep, nature is never wrong even if we don't understand it!
  11. I am the guardian of around half a mile of riverbank which contains a mixture of mainly white willow; goat willow and osiers. Most of the big trees self pollard which is good news on one level as I'm about to install a log gasification system, but aesthetically, I'm left with some quite ugly gangly looking trees! Having taken a walk in a local town and seen how the authorities manages similar trees along their river bank i.e.they pollard them, I am of a mind to do the same. My question is, where do I start researching how best to do this? I'm not a professional arborist, but as I have the right gear and plenty of experience after 30 years of clearing up trees from the bank and river, will be looking to carry out the work myself
  12. Thanks and will follow your advice. The trees nearby are mature so probably why they're not currently showing signs. Will enjoy them while I can though...
  13. Thanks. These look perfect so will order a pair
  14. thanks, will order pair to try as cost less than a pint!
  15. Many thanks for the tips about log tongs/cant hook etc which I do have but will certainly take on board the suggestions to use them more. Still would really appreciate opinions on decent gloves?
  16. Is this young ash sapling showing the symptoms of the disease? It's 5m away from larger brethren which aren't showing signs. If it is diseased, what should I do with this sapling? Thanks
  17. Every month I get through a pair of so-called heavy duty gloves moving timber around. It is financially and environmentally unsustainable. Main problem is holes in fingertips and whilst gaffer tape extends short-term life, even that eventually gives up. Would very much welcome advice on specific gloves to look at and even how to affect a better repair
