  1. I use a bungee on my pole lathe instead of a pole so i honestly have no idea. Heres a few pictures of my lathe though
  2. Alder, the wood changes colour everyday (was white when first turned).
  3. The monkey puzzle had a knot in the middle and i'm too much of a wuss to get my hands and tools all sticky. I turned the Cherry though and got two really nice bowls out of them. I've sold one of them and the other is in a gallery somewhere.
  4. Finally got my hands on some green wood to turn. Wood's Ash.
  5. Yep i get the odd split with beech and the bigger bowls become more uneven in shape over time but nothin to bad. I actually made my first bowl with beech its over a year old now and has maintained it's shape (very small and thin though).
  6. Not much really, the bowls maintain the same shape although it's likely that the rim of the bowl will warp over time giving it a bumpy more rustic look in my opinion. The bowl in the picture below shows this, it was turned by George Lailey and is around 60 years old, possibly older. I've found that with some of the bowls that i've made were i haven't really removed much from the inside of the bowl, that over time they become very twisted and warped. This make any sense? i'm kind of rambling on now...
  7. Made a big Beech fruit bowl today and it had a face... Unfortunately by the time i'd reached the final shape of the bowl it had already been carved off.
  8. Been very busy with college but managed to turn two beech bowls over the weekend.
  9. I've just finished oiling all of the silver birch bowls and i left one un-oiled (the one on the far left) so that you can see the difference before and after oiling. Used edible linseed oil btw. :001_smile:
  10. I had a rather large piece of Beech and after watching a video of Robin Wood turning a nest of bowls i just had to have a go! I only aimed to get two bowls out of the wood and by some miracle and several hours of work i came out with my first nest, i'm well chuffed but think that i will stick to making single bowls for now.....
  11. I its a lovely process crafting them and you definitely need energy for the turning process!
  12. Hi Steve, i followed instructions on how to build my lathe in Mike Abbots book "Green woodworking: Working with wood the natural way" the book costs about £30 quid with it being out of print but if you dig deep enough on the internet i'm sure you'll find some decent plans online. Cheers and good luck building!
  13. Here's a couple pics of the actual pole lathe. I've taken it out of the barn/ workshop with the weather getting better (kind of). Its sits in the garage when i'm not using it and i should be getting a new set up in the woods nearby so i'll make sure to post some pics of that at some point.
