  1. Actually though, somebody must have complained or there wouldn't be the plethora of gear we have today!!
  2. My point being that what was said upset him, lets just leave it there, I don't think he's coming back in any hurry anyway!
  3. Look, I know nobody likes to be called out on things like this and I don't want to get into some pre-pubescent argument over it but the guy had every right to ask the question as it was a concern of his, you may deem it fatuous but in that case just say nothing, what right do you have to tell a guy he shouldn't be a climber just because he doesn't know whether he likes the feel of a piece of equipment, I don't like the feel of the Spiderjack myself, am I in the wrong industry too? The answer you gave wasn't constructive in any way atall, it was only ever intended to make him feel like a turd and then everyone else chimed in aswell, so yes, that is bullying in my book.
  4. Also guys, take the piss by all means when someone can take it but this guy clearly isn't enjoying it, so don't, it's bullying
  5. I would suggest setting it up on your line and having a feel, you're not going to be able to tell much from turning it with a finger, trouble is now the idea is in your head it might be hard to shake the placebo but try and look past it, if you really don't like it, go back to what you're used to. Chances are it's probably fine but there's no point using kit you're not happy with.
  6. So here's my stack for today.. The result of a days cutting and a days chucking down and stacking all by hand. Finally feel like I'm getting the hang of this forestry malarkey!
  7. Thanks man, that was a really lovely thing to wake up to on my day off. Take care also. Nick
  8. This may have been a topic already but I'll go in head first all the same. I just thought I would create a thread for those who fancy sharing how their day has gone. Maybe you have had an epic day, not a saw stuck or a silky cut in sight, the team has been in good spirits and clients are happy, there was an amusing incident involving a neighbor, a scuba suit and a Japanese love doll, or maybe you've had a crap day and want to vent about it to those who will understand. Unfortunately, today(and my apologies for entering in on a negative note) was of the latter for me.. I've not had a terrible day on the grand scheme of things, but never the less an uninspiring drag. I've been doing some forestry work while things are quiet, currently thinning a Douglas plantation. Today was a case of finishing up the last block before moving on to the next site, straight forward enough but about 95% of all marked trees were very tall whippy examples of Goat Willow that have self seeded all over the place and woven themselves nicely amongst the already extremely dense canopy, so it has been a whole lot of trying to untangle those and then a whole lot of dealing with the mess they make, worst of all they are of no commercial value whatsoever and I'm on piece rate, so for a long old day of frustration, getting whipped, scratched and violently penetrated I made about £20! Never mind, rough with the smooth 'ey.
  9. My car stinking of Douglas sap at the end of a day doing forestry, being so in touch with the seasons, the privilege it is to climb and interact with such an immense force of nature, the communication with the tree as you navigate a challenging climb, the views, talking b****cks at lunch time, being treated like a celebrity by the general public, being treated like a member of the royal family by generous clients, that rockstar feeling you get at the end of a really good day, sitting at my computer studying the science of trees with a cup of tea at the end of the day... Lot's I like about this job really!
  10. I think this is a rather lovely example of the 'half life of facts', a scientific paradigm in which an indeterminable half of everything we know now as fact will at some stage be disproved.
  11. That's right, put in the hard work and commitment and your career will open up in front of you. All the best matey.
  12. Yeah, he seems like a top bloke, I did a terrible and inexcusable thing, one of those things that I absolutely hate with a passion, I booked onto one of his courses and then for one thing or another my life got turned upside down and I couldn't make it, trouble was I totally forgot all about it until it was far too late to give reasonable notice, so several slices of humble pie later and here I am but Roland couldn't have been nicer about it. I really do owe him one!
  13. Hi All, I just wanted to put in a good word really for Roland Heming. I have been trauling around the interweb for a while now and I have yet to find anybody else offering quite the level of value for money that his courses do. If you are in the market you really should check him out, he's offering bed and breakfast too and with that included the total cost is still comparable to most other providers for the course alone. Just sayin'... Here's a link to his site http://www.rolandheming.co.uk/
  14. I have re-posted this thread in General Chat as I didn't realise that nobody can reply to it here.
  15. I would like to take the opportunity here too to reach out to members and ask for any advice you could give somebody like me in my current position. It would be very much appreciated.
  16. Hi all, I did have this in the employment section but I was advised by another member that nobody can reply to it where it was so I'm reposting it here.. I am right at the very start of my journey in arboriculture. I have been working in forestry for a while as a labourer and I never realised that I would love it so much, as my boss told me 'The sawdust gets into your veins!'. I have always loved trees in a big way and it has made me realise that this is the direction I need to be heading. I am happy to continue for a while in forestry but really I want to be a tree surgeon in the long run. So, I'm looking for somebody to take me on as a groundie/labourer and help me gain the relevant knowledge, skills and experience to work my way upward, with the aim to be a climber one day. I am booked in to do my CS30/31 but otherwise have no qualifications yet, I do hold a full uk drivers license. I am keen and a very hard worker. References available by request
