  1. By the way, arbwork nice piece of work, keep it up! Thank Dan, Never made a rattle, assuming it has a hollow in the top end for the rattle bits? Mendip, Have you got a budget? What sort of size do you want to turn?
  2. Started this cedar bowl today, bit wobbly to begin with! It had a bit of rot and rather a large knot, haha! Managed to remove all bits of rot and sanded ready for hollowing out soon!
  3. Interesting that! Cheers for the advice
  4. Lots of sanding, then several thin coats of polyurethane clear varnish believe it or not, think I got away with it because it was plywood! When I make another I would not use the varnish finish, instead I would use sanding sealer followed by acrylic lacquer if I wanted that sort of shine.
  5. Thanks chaps, It was good fun to make High grade of 16mm birch plywood is what I used Planned it out on Google sketchup to work out sizes of the different pieces for minimal wastage. There was 11-12 pieces that I cut out to begin with. Glued two pieces together at a time lining up the rim edge, then glued them together in stages lining up were the rim would be, hoping the bottom would line up too! Found that a scaper worked better than a bowl gouge, the heat from all the glues builds up a bit. Hope this helps!
  6. Thought I would try turning a bit a plywood!
  7. Thanks and Apologies for late reply Roots of the ash were very wet and squishy, possible a bit discoloured.
  8. Before and after I stripped some of the bark on the ash tree. Bark seemed strongly attached and I could not see any black mycelium, tried several places. Thanks
  9. The other side of the hedge (on top of a railway embankment) is a lot more sparse than this side but it does not appear to have the same dead foliage. The side with the dead foliage on is in a back garden, sheltered but it is quite exposed from the railway side. Thanks
  10. You could take a loan from student finance! That's what I have done this year
  11. Thanks Peter I will try and get under the bark tomorrow. The hedge was trimmed yesterday but as for previous years I don't know! 👍
  12. Not sure whether this is a fungi a beetle or just lots of wounds that haven't healed over properly on a sweet chestnut. They are quite deep and there when about 20 or more on a 10ft section near the base of the Sweet chestnut. None of the other SWs close had these holes in them. Thanks for your help in advance!
  13. Would I be right in saying this is some sort of aphid attacking this let leylandii hedge
  14. These fungi on a sycamore stump?
  15. Hi new to this forum but could really do with some help identifying these few fungi. What fungi would cause a ash tree to fall over by its roots like this, roots look as though they have just broken apart!
  16. Hi, Just passed my aerial rescue and basic climbing with Roland Hemming training. If you need training head down to North Dorset and get yourself ticketed up. If the prices do not persuade you then the experience these guys have to pass on is priceless. The accommodation is sweet too, if you have to stop down there like I did the coppleridge inn is excellent - cooked breakfast everyday! Cheers martin for the fantastic week, even though we got soaked a few days! Check them out - rolandheming.co.uk Andy
