  1. That would be brilliant if you could many thanks Richard

Will have a look in the morning when I put the computer on as I think I have a manual for one in PDF format I could email over to you
  2. Thanks for that a job for the weekend I think.

Ant idea where I could get a manual so I have a chance of getting it back together in the right order!:blushing:

    Many thanks Richard

I doubt that repair will total £100. It's highly unlikely that the oil pump drive and the oil pump and the oil tank pipe/tube and the oil filter will all need changing. Empty the oil tank and clean with some diesel, maybe renew the filter if it's not been changed in quite a while. Take the clutch off and have a look at the oil pump drive; is it in one piece, that sort if thing. Inspect the oil pump worm-gear for stripped thread/wear. Price up replacement part/s and then decided.
  3. I know I don't really need a saw as such but they do save a hell of a lot of time!

You can buy a new MS170 for under £170, what is "stupid money" that will buy a new saw and leave change  Check it over to see if the oil line, pump or filter is blocked. Bar and chain are standard running costs for a saw anyway so shouldn't be a factor. You could do what you are looking at with a bow saw or axe.
  4. I was trying to say that I did not want to pay £100 for a repair hence buy a new one!

    Thanks for answering everyone

    Richard

    Hi,

A new saw for £100? not worth buying IMO.

Better to get the 170 repaired & save up for something decent.

  5. If everything else is ok, a new oil pump, bar and chain aren't going to be much.

Oil pump less than £5 inc.

    Bar 12" £24 inc., 14" £26.50inc.

    Chain £13.20 inc.

Or do you really want a new saw?

Not really a new saw just thought that I would be looking at about a ton and not willing to pay that much to repair.

So maybe will look into it further thanks for that.

  6. Hi I have a very old ms170 I think!

Anyway oiler is dead and chain needs replacing and bar has seen better days. So it's time to replace. What should I get?

It's only for very occasional use. Taking low branches off felling very small tress(maximum 10-12 foot high) and taking out large overgrown shrubs!

The stihl lasted 10 plus years.

I want something that will go when I ask it to but it need not be special.

    Many thanks in advance richard

  7. Hi all gave up the booze coming on 6 years ago now.

Was going to be my downfall. Came too close to losing my wife kids house etc etc......

Now have my own business, feel great money in bank.:biggrin:

My latest is smoking been on e cigs for 3 months now with no cheating.

Now just got to pack this in.

Just finding it harder than booze to stop.

Anyway point is if I can do it so can anyone. A big point I think is forging yourself for all the stupid things you have done!:blushing:

    Cheers Richard.

    Meant forgiving!

  9. Hi all.

First of all not a tree man. Just a gardener stumbled on this forum and look at it for tips on kit that's relevant to me. Picked up some good tips as well so thanks.

Anyway as the thread says stump grinding how much.

A friend of mine had a large chestnut taken down at a property he has just bought for investment. £1800 plus vat about 35 foot tall plus 25ft of hedge halved. Down to 6 or so feet. And 20% reduction of another tree sycamore I think.

He was supposed to have been quoted for stump grinding but they said on the day that it would be extra. So he asked how much and they come out with £250 plus vat. Seems an awful lot to me? No access issues stump was about 2 1/2 to 3 foot wide.

They left the grin dings in a huge pile.

I went to move them for him and found bits of stump still present.

Total bill came to about £2550

Any comments appreciated (sorry for long post)

    Cheers Richard
