  1. Cheers joe , by the sound of it the wedges are the best way to go because other people have gave me the same advice. Youd of thought i would of been taught this at college , this is the first ive heard about using wedges
  2. Cheers johnny , do they do these plastic wedges at most arb suppliers? And good idea to use an old chain on another saw or wedges to do last bit
  3. Thanks codlasher thats really good advice and you ar totally right. I tried the bore cut and it got stuck right at the end. And something you mentioned about clearing a space to see whats happening , the trees are coverd in ivy so couldnt see too good, lack of common sense on my part, will have a look for the stihl wedges you mentioned Cheers
  4. So if i do say 4 cuts close on top about a third of the way in? And then 2 cuts close underneath? And yes , the piece i was cutting seemed to twist and thats when the saw was getting trapped
  5. Plus im not in a remote area there are fencers on site aswel
  6. Cheers paul. Yes compression is on the top, thats a good idea with the wedges and bet it works , will try that tomorrow . Yea i know what you mean about lone working but its either go to work and get paid or sit at home skint. I just try to be as safe as i can Thanks for the advice
  7. Hiya mate, i know you have probably already thought of this but have tried getting an apprenticeship ? I was desperate to get into the trade like you over a year ago, i literally rung every tree surgeon in my area and didnt have much luck to start with but i perserverd and eventually got passed onto a tree surgeon who wanted an apprentice. I wanted the job that much i agreed to 100 quid a week pay and to pay my own college fee which was 600 quid, was skint for a year but its best thing ive done, dont work for the guy anymore but just qualified and still in the trade earning ok money now. Just keep trying mate itl come eventually if u want it that much
  8. I am a newly qualified tree surgeon but know ive still got alot to learn, today and the next 2 days i am processing 6 large poplars that have been felled. Im doing it on my own as the guy i work with is away. Now i learnt all about tension and compression cuts at college and have processed loads of small to medium sized trees before with no problems. The stem on these poplars are huge so have been using an husqvarna 395xp with a 28" bar. Got the saw trapped 3 times. I did what i normaly would do with the compression on the top, cut in a 3rd from the top and undercut two thirds,( it got trapped) after that i tried undercutting all the way through ( it got trapped) then tried boring in the middle cutting down through and out the bottom then back up ( it got trapped). Is there something im doing wrong or somethingi dont know when it comes to processing large trees? Cheers
  9. Thanks taffupatree and gand for advice. Will play around with a few and see which best suites me
  10. Yea ok cheers, going to do some research on it aswel as taking the advice given on here and will see how it goes. Thanks
  11. Thanks for the advice. On larger limbs would this still work?
  12. Thanks alot, ive just had a quick look at the website, some pretty useful stuff on there by the looks of it
  13. Cheers , i dont know what a crab is, recently finished an apprenticeship in arboriculture but they didnt teach us anything to do with rigging. Think il have a look at some of the books people have mentioned and clips on youtube
  14. Yea ive heard of that book, il have a look at that cheers
  15. i am new to rigging . Today i took some fairly big limbs off a black poplar . i did this by wrapping the rope around the limb and choking it by clipping the karabina onto the rope and pulling it tight. This worked but whenever i see pictures or videos of tree surgeons rigging they always have some sort of device, pulley or knot system . Is there a right or wrong way to rigging? And what is the best way of doing it ?
  16. I am new to rigging. Today i took some fairly big limbs off a black poplar, i did this by wrapping the lowering rope around the limb and choking it by clipping the karabina onto the rope and pulling it tight. This worked but whenever i see videos or pictures of tree surgeons rigging they always have some sort of device, pulley or knot system they use. Is there a right or wrong way to rigging? And what is the best way of doing it?
  17. go on google and type in " tension and compression cuts in tree work" a few links will come up explaining whats cuts to use in different situations to avoid the saw getting trapped.
  18. a good ground saw either stihl 250 or 261 ive found the best in my opinion but you wont get a new 250 because they dont make them anymore, a combi can, sharpening kit to , felling lever and id say thats about all you need for cs30, cs31 and appropriate PPE. hope this helps
  19. a tool list to do CS30 CS31 or a tool list in general?
