Cheers Simon, I'd totally forgotten about you! You are the one that kindly allowed me to build up my poplar stockpile :-) would I be able to pop up to the yard to see what you've got? If so I'll try and pop in tomorrow.

Hi there, Just wondering if there is anyone in/close to Coventry, that would be interested in me taking any (non-cord type) waste off their hands? Ideally I'd like to avoid Poplar as I currently have an abundance of the stuff, but am pretty open to any waste that requires a bit of 'effort'. I know it's a bit of an ask in the current climate (two-fold :-) but if you don't ask and all that.... Recently came home from work to see a tree-surgeon truck carting off my neighbours eaucalyptus tree, missed opportunity :-(

Any ideas what these little buggers are? I can really do without anything else trying to destroy my firewood stack. Also does anyone know how long it takes for powderpost beetles/woodworm to turn your firewood into dust? I only ask, as I'm wondering how best to use my firewood, which is largely oak(although there is a lot of horse chestnut/sweet chestnut/eucalyptus etc). If it's gonna take 6 months I'd rather burn it this winter with a much higher water content.

Not sure. It was mixed in with a load of oak, but this piece was that dried I couldn't say for sure. No bark etc. in terms of ID though, my hat goes off to treecreeper. No prize unfortunately :-)

Would make sense, but for the fresh dust under the hole, indicating something had entered or exited recently? Confused.com only been paying attention to it as my wood stacks have been infested by powderpost beetle :-(

Any ideas? found a big hole 4-5mm and a load of fresh dust. It was a piece of deadwood and when I split it, these fell out. Cheers

Thanks alycidon, I'm just hoping to do this job the once, therefore want the best solution. Heat seal seems the way forward, fingers crossed :-)

Cheers all, just purchased the attached for £180 with a few adjustments to make, flue collar, blanking plate etc :-) @ stubby, it's not the building work that's daunting, it's the mrs, after she's just papered and the fireplace surround has been put in. I was really just after a stop-gap burner and I'm hoping once I'm done with this, it'll be just the job. One question though! None of the panels are cracked,but the joins seem like they could do with a bit of filling, is it just a matter of fire cement between the joins? And before it's mentioned, I've already stripped the 'bodge-it' fire cement :-)

Thanks all, I've looked at morso's. my issue is that I only have a 530mm height gap, so need something small. This was on eBay and looking good until it went from £210 to £300 in 8 seconds....in the middle of a hot summer :-/??? I'm also looking at a "little smithy", but it's so difficult to find a good second hand stove, eBay seems the only option. Does £300 sound reasonable to you guys? I nearly fell off my chair, lol. Also any other recommendations on 'short' log burners would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :-)

Thankfully it's all outside, as per the first pic, so they'll hopefully be gone or deep in the wood by the time it comes to burning. In fairness, I only bring it in and it's straight on the fire. Makes extra trips, but they're free, unlike woodworm damage 💷💷💷

Be some effort with a hammer! Good exercise though :-) . I think the general consensus is that if you're burning it quicker than the little blighted can turn it to dust, you're ok. And unless they chew through oak quicker than my chainsaw, I should be ok :-D

I'm showing that log store to the missus, she moans at me for what I've got :-( fair point on the felt roof, lol. I've just discovered a little wood boring beetle on my stack as well about 2/3mm with an orange/brown colour action and a shiny head. Also seems to be laying little shiny black eggs( or these may be different beetles) any ideas on what they are and what you can do about them???

Cheers all! David that's quite close to what I'm looking at, but I want it to be a bit more like the attached(to cover up a largely concrete path). Is there a particular wood preserve/treatment to use or soak the rings in before putting down. I'm hoping to get similar to the following for effect, but it will take some doing :-/

Hi there guys, I've just acquired some oak (from arbtalk:-) to use as rings for a stepping stone style path. Any advice on how to treat it before putting them down on a mix of mud/grass/concrete path? They'll be approx 2inches thick and roughly cut with the chainsaw as the rough cut will give a bit of natural grip :-) Cheers

I'd be curious to see the results to a barked split log and an unbarked split log. Mainly because I don't remove the bark when splitting as I would have thought they'd both dry evenly. Obviously with the bark all of the way round it I retaining the moisture, but if split would bark make much difference???

Cheers Acg128, but sorry I didn't really make myself clear. I've basically been offered it for free (for me to use a firewood myself) I'm basically wondering if anyone is likely to come out, just to cut me a load of rounds? I appreciate I'd be paying, but I also appreciate there is a lot more to your work than just chopping up an already felled log. And what I'm likely to have to pay someone to come out an do the cutting? I'm quite happy doing the lugging around of the rings of course :-)

No mate, just got into firewood and I'm bow sawing everything from 4" to 15-20" diameter logs in my garage (hard work and wayward cuts). This tree has collapsed and the only mate I have with a chainsaw only has a 14" bar :-( and I'm thinking this would involve cutting 20-30 rounds. I don't really want to try my hand at a chainsaw with something of this size either.lol. I just wasn't sure if it's the kind of job people willingly take on?

Hi there, Just spotted a fallen oak tree today and asked the owner (in Coventry) if I could have it, if I had it cut up to take away for firewood. Just wondering whether or not people are willing to do this kind of work I.e when the tree is already downed and it needs cutting into rounds. I would say the tree is 20-30ft with a 20-30" diameter. I was wondering how much would be a reasonable price for the job? Cheers
