I am sort of in the same boat mate, little older and wiser but looking to change career. I am starting my training at the end of this month, though from what I have learned in the past .... doing the tickets gets you started but its the tip of the iceberg, once you do the training you start to learn!

I am only just about to begin my life working with trees but I dont understand that there is no specialist course for 1st aid in this line of work. I will be bringing with me 10 years experience of training to deal with injuries from explosions and gunshot being a soldier but I also have 1st aid at work and I dont think that would fully cover dealing with a saw cut.

I have to say being a still serving soldier I have put my goretex through some sh1t and it has always done the job, even after being in the pouring wet up the side of a mountain for days on end. I have done 10 years and had 2 in that time. For what civies pay they are worth it when they are so durable! The newer ones are better as they have pockets where the old ones didnt.
