The question is who do you worry about looking like a clueless twat to?

Other tree guys (the sort who post pics on Arbtalk Facebook) or clients who have been told the likely outcome and still want the work done?

Exactly. I'm capable of doing a nice pruning job, but I'll save it for the customers who appreciate it.

I'll generally try and advise people what will look best/ be kinder to the tree, but if they want it walloping I'm not wasting my time with a silky.

As a freelancer if i turned down every spec i disagreed with my kid would go hungry.

and you come across like a stalker

a blind mad one who likes pollards

i spoke to someone at a show got a job doing what i said, its where the idea came from.

he sent out emails, made enquiries, got bored, went out and found one of the tree firms he wrote to and sat there waiting for brew time.

they took him on. said they were impressed with his attitude.

pollards are ugly as shit on stick and not particularly good practice. i suppose urine favour of lopping and topping as well are you?

I think i can speak for Mick when i say he's absolutely in favour of a good topping when the client pays, as are most of us.

I feel thicker for participating in this with you, but I've had a beer so I'll forgive myself.

A 088 will pull a 36" all day everyday for its entire working life.

A 066/660/ 661 will die under 6 months doing the same. I am talking about burning 10 to 20 liters a day not mincing around in back gardens.

A 66 will do everything well enough but it's a lot lighter built than a 084/088.

I would much rather use a lighter saw but we didn't have that option.

I strictly stick to mincing, so you can keep "hetero" saw.

  4. The thing that confuses me is that everyone I've met who has an 880 for tree work never has longer than a 36" bar anyway. Fair enough if you're dropping monsters on the regular and use a longer bar, but it's as if they looked at a 36" 660 and thought "Yeah, I'd like a heavier version, please".

Has anyone shown you how to start big saws on the induction stroke?

Or you could have tried your hand to the starter handle with your Brassiere.

Nope, my 660 can manage pretty much anything I'm likely to come across in the UK. Not much need for an 88 round here.

My findings also. Plus slower everywhere else, not least psyching yourself up to carry and start the bastard.

I had the displeasure of using an 881 from a mewp with a 36" bar a couple of months back. Plenty of torque but no faster than my 660. Horrible to sling around though.

The starter handle had broken and they'd improvised with one from a spare top handle. I took one attempt and starting it and flat out refused.

Playing ‘fire jenga’. Getting some manky old poplar to burn.

I don’t regret going with the 881 rather than a 661. When you are handling things mechanically there’s very little bending down to be done, so the extra weight is more than offset by raw power, even in smaller timber like this.

There was a squirrel in the tree when weset the rope- I saw him bolting upwards. No sign of him on the deck, he either got impaled and buried or he scampered down before we set the gob cut!

The 880 will cut slower than the 660 in anything other than 30"+ timber

I'd immediately let that joker be someone else's problem Jose.

The people who want their emergencies dealing with in their terms and to their budgets, are usually the same ones who've never had anyone look at their trees or ignore you when you flag up a concern.

  9. Last time i was in a pharmacy the lad brought out the prescription and quietly asked what my exemption was. I didn't understand so he showed me the list and then i had to explain that i pay for my prescriptions. He seemed genuinely surprised.

It was a busy day in the pharmacy and i hadn't seen a single person before me pay.
