  12. I have just completed my first days training for my long overdue nptc cs 32 medium fell ticket today and after felling my first tree of the day (a 70 foot causican pine) I stick my trusty granfors splitting maul in the felled trunk for safe keeping so I didn't mid lay it. After wandering over to observe one of the candidates to observe them I watched to my horror another candidate fell another large pine directly on top of my maul and felling gear bag. NOOOOO! After running over expecting my maul to be smashed it wa driven fully into the trunk of my tree. Amazingly after a couple of minutes cutting the maul came out totally un scathed. What a quality product!!!! Money well spent, recommended !!!
  13. I gather there is a European climbing qualification that would benefit me working abroad. Does anybody know where I can find out about this?
  14. Hi all, Well where shall I start? I Am 30 years old and have been in the industry for nearly 12 years and have worked for several different company's in this time, private, domestic and utility. I am a very competent climber and am currently working as a lead climber/charge hand for a very reputable arb approved company. I am trying to plan for the future and am at a loss. I can't decide if I should take the next step and start my own company or Apply for an assistant tree officers job which would ultimately lead to a tree officers job in the future. I have all the contacts and a yard in mind and the potential to go and work in Norway for a month which would give me the funds to buy a decent tipper and chipper to get me going. I started up a logging business last year with a partner which went brilliantly but was badly let down due to his lack of interest from my partner so I am thinking I should go it alone. I am unsure which route to take. Pen pushing tree officer, utility contractor or domestic/commercial arboriculture. Any help, advice and your experiences greatly received. HELP.
  15. the lantra info is really interesting. i now have a lot more options than i thought. the yard ive got is based within the footprint of a 17th century farm. two sandstone leantwos on the back of a large sandstone hay barn with a medium sized enclosed yard. funding if for the renovation of some of the buildings and to replace our delivery vehichle and to purchase some more prossessing and extraction equipment. We also have a larger yard about half a mile up the road which is a 45 by 10 meter concrete hardstanding in the middle of a 10 acre field. there is good access for articulated lorries etc. it all seems to be falling into place. just need the funding to pull it all together. im also looking for TIMBER. im in derbyshire if anybody knows of anything??
  16. just got off the phone to the forestry comission and he seemed very interested in helping although the grants they offer are not quite right for us. hes arranged a visit to come and take a look at what were about. and he also wants photographs of the buildings were situated in. his ears pricked up when i started talking about historical work methods etc. fingers crossed the ball might be rolling now.
  17. i am looking into the micro grant scheme but it all seems a bit of a grey area. didnt know you had to put in the first 5k. crikey. just seems like alot of people have managed to get grants but its a mystery how. i awaiting a phone call from the forestry comission this afternoon. ill keep you posted with the results of the conversation. thanks for the advice.
  18. hi, ive recently moved my buissness to another yard and we are now trying to step up our firewood/biofuel production. Im going down the eco friendly road by using traditional swedish bee hive timber stacks, we cut all wood by hand to a high quality. All timber is locally sourced from sustainable woodlands etc.... My problem is that im finding it very hard to get infomation reguarding small buissness grants. Im looking to renovate some of the outbuildings at my new yard and to purchase some more bits of kit. just seem to have hit a dead end with the funding before ive even started. any thoughts?????
