  1. That is what i was thinking, seems a real hassle and big waste of timber as you say. Its for my own house so if i'm happy then the framers should be.
  2. Is it a job lot price or can I select what timber I can use, any idea how much they want or is it to get rid off it
  3. Thanks Alex, very helpful. One thing I'm always trying to get is keeping the heart in the centre which can be tricky with some logs which means you can only get thin boards off to get beam good quality. Its a bit of a head scratcher to get you head round but sure it will come good with practice. I have a cutting list as long as your arm for my oak frame.
  4. Ive just stated milling my oak frame for my new house and the framers have asked for certain spec with no heart on face. Does anyone know the best way to achieve this without wasting loads off good timber. I was thinking of starting with a larger diameter log, squaring it off then taking certain sizes off like 200x125 working towards a 200x200 box hart to finish. Any tips would be greatly appreciated Thanks Chalky
  5. Hi Al I might be interested, can you keep them as big as you can, smaller sections have limited use for beams and board, pictures would be great.
  6. hi Guy I have some that I felled a few weeks ago but they are longer than that. Can send some pics if you want
  7. thought so.Douglas I've been offered is £68 per tonne delivered in. How much could you cut in a hour, I'm cutting on a serra alpina. Problem I have is finding over size timber, hence the douglas as a option
  8. Hi All Some advise please if poss I've been offered a fencing suppling job. He wants unlimted 1'1/2x 3' at £3 1/2 rails , 3,6m long and 5x3 posts 1.8m long. I can buy 200 tonne off oversize douglas which is very clean and is approx 2ft at the butt and 24ft in length. Does anyone know what the wastage calculation is and approx cost to sell to him, he has offered £2.50 per rail and posts at £3 which seems far to cheap, rail possibly ok on price. Any advise would be much appreciated.
  9. got £10 a foot today so not too bad, as it was for nothing. Thanks for all the advice, very much appreceated.
  10. Thanks Alec, think you are probably right. I'm just getting into milling, if you have a over size log that won't fit on you mill do most people use a alaskan to get it down to cutting diameter
  11. Was hoping to mill myself but its to big to go on my serra alpina, have been offered 10 per cube as is, but can get it cut local if its worth it, not sure how easy it is to market either,
  12. Has anyone milled london plane, I have a large butt 4ft at base down to 2 1/2 ft top dead straight, I can sell it but think it might be worth good money. Any advice on milling it and drying time etc would be greatly appreciated.
  13. Thanks for all your feed back, general consensus is that its ok to burn. prices at roadside seem to be getting £45-50 a tone which pretty good i would say,Ash money. any idea whether it would be valuable for fencing material,Can't see it myself
