Below is a Quote from Brendon on a similar thread. "Baz i know where you are coming from with that one mate as everything else is going up. Going off the percentages that you have given if i was quoted 315 quid for a level load of mixed wood in a tranny tipper last year (December ) usually i will do 2 loads then this years prices at a conservative estimate would be 350 probably more ,thats 700 just for the winter months ,my combined gas/electric would come nowhere near that , OK i am just bouncing figures around ,but i reckon i would not be far off the mark .If wood suppliers do start to charge that price people will stop buying it and just switch the gas back on , i personally wouldn't want to do that but i am afraid my finances would not stretch far" Which is exactly my point. Log supplier I did answer your question, I have no contact prior to selling or after. I sold logs as I enjoyed it which was the same reason I bought all the kit, it was never my main income. What you sell logs for is entirely up to you but you also have to accept that some businesses have logs as a by product and as such may sell them at a much lower rate. I don’t make the prices I simply look at what’s available. A tree surgeon does not pay for Arb waste it’s simply a by product so if he wants to process it into logs a sell them for £25 a bag that’s up to him or her. You only have to look on eBay, builder’s bags of Oak for £35. Keith

Dave Whether you think its viable is immaterial that’s what he sells a builders bag of seasoned hardwood for!! Keith

First of all my stoves are all sold on eBay. So no prior contact. Also seasoned hardwood is available from members on here for £25 a builders bag now!! And yes I have processed and sold logs so know exactly what’s involved. Keith

Dave I never said that £120 or in your case £100 was not a fair price I simply questioned whether it was sustainable! I do get my firewood for free. Even if you take in to account my kit and time it’s still very cheap and I get to choose exactly what species I want. Keith

Log supplier Most of the waste is already in rings (apart from a few) so all I have to do is split with an 11 HP Pezzolato and throw them in the trailer. Keith

Dave It’s not about what I would charge an hour for my time it’s about market forces. Rob’s right some people who have already invested in their stove will continue to pay £120 for a cube but and a big BUT it will prevent a sizeable proportion of the general public buying a stove when they can use gas or oil with no mess or preparation and the reason I know this is because I sell stoves!! At the end of the day it makes no difference to me what wood costs because I will never have to pay for it even if I lost my contractor. Keith

Windfall Well there’s fuel for the chain saw, fuel for the splitter and about 2 hours time to process 4 cubes. I think I know where this is going so to pre-empt any conclusions on your part the chainsaw is used on my smallholding and the splitter was taken in exchange for money owed some years back which as I sure you can imagine was also used to process free logs which I sold on. As an axiom I love doing it. Keith

Nowhere did I indicate it should be FREE I merely queried whether £120 was sustainable. Read the post. Keith

Below is a quote from Highland Forestry LTD just a few minutes ago on another thread. Keith That seems awful steep.... we sell at roadside all over the country around the £36/t mark for hardwood. __________________ Highland Forestry Ltd.

Hi Rob It will continue as long as he is in business as he is a friend and we work on a quid pro quo basis and have done for 25 years. I also have land which I will be planting with ash etc, shortly, for future coppicing. There are guys on here selling seasoned hard wood in builder’s bags (not quite a cube) for £25 now!! Also on eBay £35 for Oak!! Which brings me to another point about the size of builders bags, which a great deal of firewood suppliers use I’m yet to see one that actually is a cu metre most are.8 of a metre or even.6 I’m not saying they don’t exist I’ve just never come across them. To remain sustainable the price has to be comparable or cheaper than oil or gas which at £120 for a cube of hardwood is not. Keith
  12. I’ve been following the various firewood threads with great interest and amazement, particularly prices being achieved for a cu metre, up to a staggering £120.I can see a person having the odd fire paying the above figure but for someone like myself who heats the whole house and domestic hot water with wood, that would cost in the region of not far short of £3000!!. It would be cheaper to use oil or gas and far more convenient. I should point out that my wood supply is F.O.C. via what you guys would call Arb waste/ arisings. The contractor who supplies me makes his money from the tree surgery and the removal of the waste so is more than happy for me to take whatever I require. I have absolutely no axe to grind here (sorry) it is simply an observation and wonder if these prices are truly sustainable. Keith
