  1. Thankyou for the lead - I am really looking for a personal recommendation to do a course and if someone has plans and a cutting list which they no longer have need for.
  2. I love your addition to your house - well done!! I am from near Glasgow. We would love to do a similar thing to what you have done on your house. Did you do the work yourself?
  3. Does anyone have any ideas about where I could get a cutting list and plans for an oak barn and someone to help me build it? I have been collecting oak for years and can mill it on site. thanks Archie
  4. Hi all, I have been collecting oak for a number of years now and would love to build an oak barn. I can mill the wood but would love to get my hands on a good set of plans and a cutting list. Does anyone have any ideas? thanks Archie [email protected]
  5. So pleased to hear you are not just taking the easy option and turning wood into fire wood. I keep all the oak trunks I can get my hands on. We have used oak branches to do cleft oak fencing around my garden. I think I have now got enough oak to build a barn and if I was not in Scotland I would have bought the oak from you. Good luck and if you have a yard and do not have to sell it - keep it as it is the best material for building!!
  6. I need to invent a good easy way to split logs - thought about a breaker on a digger banging logs inside a tractor tyre - has anyone had any experience of this - hate hydraulic splitters - too slow!! Also want to make a chair out of yew branches and some nice milled wood!!
  7. I would be interested to hear everyones opinion on how a cube of dryish ash compares to oil or gas in volume and equal calorific value. Oil and gas prices are rising considerably - how long will it be before the £60 worth of logs is worth £60 worth of gas or oil?
  8. Everyone knows time is money but money comes and goes - an injury is there for life and and an accident impacts people outwith a tree surgery operation. Please use common sense and prepare for the unexpected. Experienced staff should be more aware of dangers and advise inexperienced tree surgeons accordingly!! Happy New Year to all of you and best of luck and keep safe
  9. Milling wood is fantastic for those who feel that the life of a tree is unjustified if the best parts of the trunk and limbs are not used to make something beautiful. I am fortunate in having a milling operation down the road from me. Two brothers have milled an entire elm floor for my sitting room, oak beams for my house and oak planks for fencing and a chicken shed. We also have a cherry bed, sycamore doors and a yew staircase all made from wood that I have cut down. I have milled quite a lot with an alaskan mill but I found it slow and quite wasteful as one uses a lot of fuel and oil and you lose a fair amount of timber with a chain cut as opposed to a bandsaw blade. The mill for sale sounds like the perfect thing for me as I have lots of timber in the yard, however I am so bad at engineering and impractical - I would need someone to hold my hand during its operation!!
