  1. Thanks guys, I appreciate your feedback. I'm going with 1.5 - 1.7m3 I think. Twistedhicap, I think your calculations must surely be out ? Those bulk bags are actually closer to 0.5m3 or maybe 0.6m3 if full to the max, but thanks for your thoughts anyway. So, baring in mind that most pick up loads of firewood advertising 2m3 are more often than not closer to 1.5m3 then a tonne of cord equates to one "load" of logs.
  2. Thank you very much for your replies. Chain size I dont know off hand but I shouldn't it'll drastically effect the calculation ? As for the length I'd say about 30cm. I'm surprised you think it could be as much as 3m3 because I'd have guessed more like 1.5 to 2 ? Cheers.
  3. Sorry in advance for this boring topic ! Does anybody know, in ball park figures... How many Cubic meters (m3) of split logs would one hope to make from 1 tonne of hardwood cord (6-12 months old so I'd guess 35-40%mc) Thanks.
  4. Love that Bullerjan, never seen one before. What an uncompromising stove that is !
  5. Do you have any of that macci left to sell ? If so how much and how much please. Cheers.

  6. Something to consider here would be the fact that even for a nominal fireplace opening of 500x550 you'd need permanent ventillation through exterior wall of about 200cm2 (pretty draughty)and the open fire, depending on the set up may only be 5-10% efficient at best ? Unless you're dead set on in it, I'd be inclined to go for woodburner that's designed to operate either open or closed instead ? That could make for smaller ventillation requirement and you can shut the doors when not in use ? Oh, and of course benefit from up 70% efficiency ?
  7. I've experimented a bit running an old Mitsubishi 1 tonne pick up on Bio. Worked fine, pulled like a train, started well. Got plenty of funny looks stood outside Lidls filling up with 1 litre plastic bottles of veg oil ! Now knowing plenty of people in Cornwall who use the stuff it seems important to find a good supply of clean fuel, a few companies have set up manufacturing and selling bio only to shut down soon after, having let too much mucky fuel through their pumps. The other thing is to invest in a pre heater, I think they're about £80, especially in the winter months, they thin the oil thus preventing the clogging problems. Good luck.
  8. Cheers Dave, that's very helpful. Justin

  9. Thanks Davetaz and co for the continued feedback re pricing. Seems like the country has about the same prices on the whole ? Anywhere from 70-100 quid per m3 with well seasoned hardwood firmly at the £100 end ? I know a place locally selling for £135/m3 but not sure how much they sell ? It's premium quality firewood mind you. I hope you guys with the shooters and vat issues have sorted out your differences.
  10. That's a great looking website, clear and easy to use. Can you tell me who supplies those 0.2m3 barrow bags please ? And do you charge a deposit for them ? Cheers, Justin (in Cornwall)

  11. Ha ! I have an 8kw Villager too, great woodburner. Sounds like you need to look at draught proofing and insulating your house, then getting your Larch drier and shutting the burner down some more ? Thanks for the feedback though.
  12. Thanks 33bk, that's £100 /m3 and thanks ThrustSSC too, all very encouraging. Loads and cubic meters are all well debated with buyers and sellers alike I recon. It's amazing how many rogues out there sell 1m3 of wood in a 1 tonne builders bag which is of course holds just over half a cubic meter in volume and also how many sell 2 cubic meters from the butt of a 4x4 pick up that measures at maybe 1.2 m3 ! Everyone has a calculator and can measure length x width x depth surely, it's not rocket science ? Price per meter cubic meter seems to be the best measure. And judging by the more recent posts to this thread it's looking like £100/m3 for premium firewood. Plain and simple. When all's said and done it's repeat orders that make for good business and those orders come from satisfied customers only ?
  13. If you're burning 3m3 a month you must have either a massive fire or burning very poor quallity wood ? I'd estimate 3m3 to be over 1000 average sized logs which means you'd be burning 33 a day ? That's a lot .
  14. 1.33 a litre ! That's bonkers ! Thanks DN, Phatty, 18 stoner, Sandbach, Kev and Daren and others. Really useful feedback indeed and good to see some of you selling seasoned logs for decent prices. I think that firewood has for years been just a by product of Tree surgery sold primarily for a cosmetic fire to look cosy in otherwise centrally heated houses through the winter months. The heat not too important and a hissing log added to the ambiance, regardless of the fact it's probably 40% water ? But I'm sure as logs begin to be used more and more as primary heating so people will become far more discerning, arm themselves with moisture meters and appreciate the work involved from felling to delivery of a well presented load of properly seasoned hardwood and be happy to pay £100 m3 for it.
  15. You're right Robbo it is hard graft ! You're charging about £100 m3 which to my mind, given costs and labour involved is about right for well seasoned Oak ? Unfortunately Joe blogs would still prefer on the whole a Cab star load (1.7m3), or similar of mixed (mostly conifer) virtually green at about 40%mc thinking it's a better deal for £120 quid, especially when the seller says the butt's 3 meters long so it must be 3 meters cubed of logs ! When will the penny drop ? People say it burns lovely on a bed of coal !? Just ranting now... too much Rum !
  16. That's really interesting feedback, cheers guys ! With the cost of fossil fuels spiralling I'm surprised to see what a buyers market the firewood industry seems to be ? Too many people selling logs maybe ? No wonder folk are falling over themselves to fit woodburners. For a few years down here a good load of logs seems to have been priced at around £120 (£65m3), some less, some more but in general terms not really gone up in price ? In that time heating fuel has gone from maybe 35p to 70p ! Why is that ?
  17. I'm trying to get an idea of prices across the country at the moment please ? Going rate per cubic meter (m3) of very well seasoned, split, hard wood logs, 20-25 %mc ? Cheers.
  18. Does anyone in west Cornwall have or know of anybody who may have any storage space to rent ? Lizard to Truro area ? Well ventilated, dry barn /Dutch barn / big shed ? I'll be needing around 30-50 m2 for now ? Thanks.
  19. Stone the crows ! 300 tonnes !? Have pm'ed you .
  20. 300 tonnes !!! Are you serious ? How did you wind up with that lot then ?

What sort of Briquettes are they ?

    Where are the made ?

    When were they made?

    What's their mc% ?

    Bags, boxed or loose ?

    Labelled ?

    Are they palletted ?

How are you selling them for ?

    300 tonnes !

  21. Thank you ballibeg, very helpful. Cheers.
  22. Nothing like a thread like this to fire up the naysayers ! "when we were kids" blah blah blah ... I've never found a Geowatsit but it sounds like a great way to get kids excited about exploring the countryside and parents too to go to places where they'd not otherwise have considered. Walking is just walking without a target and a pub isn't a good enough target or a 10 year old !
  23. I know I could go and pull a 1m3 stack apart and throw it into a plie and see but does anyone know off hand how much volume a 1 cubic meter stack would equate to if losely piled into say one meter cubed crates ? I'm guessing about 1.6m3 ? I was asked the question earlier and didn't know the answer ? Thanks.
  24. I've been selling quite a few "Dumpy" or one tonne builders bags of logs this season. Interestingly often advertised as 1 cubic meter (m3) but infact are only 0.6m3 (85x85x85). On average a good bulging to overflowing sack holds about 220 logs of around 10" and depending on species, seasoning, mc% sell for between £45 - £70. Mine sell for £60. Ps, if I'm ever counting them out for any reason I place a single log to one side each time I get to 50.
  25. Thanks for that. I might look into finding some. Cheers.
