  1. It’s days may be limited as they don’t like heavy pruning as this sets off a cycle of rot pockets. However I would cut off everything that clearly has no life left later in the year, September/October onwards when it’s getting ready for the dormant season. In the short term help it by removing grass around the base, at least 3ft all round, lay plain cardboard down and mulch with well rotted woodchips, maybe some seaweed if you have access to any, bit of manure mixed in possibly.

im sure others with more knowledge than me will be able to add to this 👍

Why do you think you have such an abundance of work when the general climate is so lean?

Tell us your f**king secret, NOW!😆

I don’t think there’s anything specific - I just price fairly but definitely not cheap- make a decent living and invest in new kit. Some families I’ve worked for for years I’m now doing stuff for the grandchildren who are getting their own places.
I pass on work I don’t want to do to others - I’m honest and know my limits. Get a much younger freelance climber in to do the stuff I can’t anymore - not as flexible as I used to be 😏

I like the smaller domestic jobs - it’s not for everybody and I have the utmost respect for the guys doing the big takedowns and reductions.

A fair proportion of customers now just say book us in for same time next year as over the winter I was booking in 4-5 months in advance.

I won’t do gardening or weeding etc but there’s definitely a shortage of people who can do this properly - two guys I know are in constant demand and don’t even want their number passed on as they have no gaps

  3. We’re fully booked into July and have at least one weeks work booked into each following month right up to Christmas. Most advance bookings are regulars we’ve been doing for years but about 15-20% are new customers.

the phone isn’t ringing much at the moment as is usual this time of year which I’m quite glad about to be fair.

Everything we are doing this month was booked in either last December or early this year.

With pay at pump fast becoming the new norm we are being conditioned to pay in advance. Our local Asda garage is now card only at pump, the office is closed indefinitely!

I don’t remember our Asda ever not being pay at pump - last 20 years at least I think?

Equal distance away from EVERY job you do?

No equal from home - I’ll often bring loads back, take my pick of what I want for myself then drop the rest. The rubbish stuff, ie woodwormed, bit of rot etc goes to the free site for biomass.Couple of people will pay if I drop at theirs - certainly not expecting to get much for softwood but they’re happy and my truck is ready for the next day.

if I need to tip during the job then whichever is closest 👍

Tell him he can drop it but you won’t pay.

He’ll be happy just to get rid.

I have two tip sites almost equal distance away - one is free to tip at, the other pays me a little for any logs - guess who gets the most logs (not hardwood obviously)?

  7. There was a post last August to recruit a climber near Hamburg - maybe contact them for advice as they’re more likely to know what is required, advantageous etc?
some have posted that speaking German isn’t necessary but course it helps to speak some of the language whichever country you go to.

    Viel Gluck 👍

  8. Hardly ripping them off - they wanted it doing again as it overhangs 3 gardens, a public alley and doesn’t overhang the substation. Very happy with the job, booked us in for another two days work and neighbours were good too. Standard job every 3-6 years depending on location

  9. Great weather today, finally in T shirts again. Nice job on this medium oak partially over a public alleyway - not a soul walked through all day but we took turns having someone in there to warn the climber when someone coming through

Apparently a cell of ISIS based in Afghanistan. Both US intelligence and the group itself claiming responsibility seems to support the idea. I'm surprised to be honest, my first thought was Putin doing it himself to muddy the waters a bit, for whatever reason he'd think it necessary.

60ish dead now, 145 injured. The gunmen are currently still at large.

I suppose, logically, Vladimir will now want to divert some of his military capabilities towards Afghanistan...

    What could possibly go wrong!

Death toll currently at 143. 11 suspects including 4 gunmen arrested.

    isis k has claimed responsibility
