  1. Trickeys is a drop of stunning cider. If anyone is driving past mendip logs, could you drop him in a flagon or two, and ask him how bath got on today. Up the chiefs ! He might need it.

  2. My experience of clearview is I would never again buy one or recommend one to others. I bought a clearview 650 back in june 1996 and had it fitted by its local dealer. By the spring of 1998 it was unuseable, with the flat top having warped by about an inch out of true due to an interior baffle having moved due to a manufacturing fault. You would be sitting in a chair looking at the fire and be able to seem the flames inside the fire under the flat top. Lengthy dealings with the local dealer and clearview were a complete waste of time - clearview saying that the dealer should rectify the problem at his expense in the margin that he made in the deal, the local supplier and fitter saying it was a manufacturing fault and should be put right by clearview. At the threat of legal action by myself against clearview, I was sent a letter stating the only way out was for me to return the stove at my expense to there factory in Shropshire where I would be given a full refund for the stove as long as I signed a declaration stating that I would never again buy one of there products again, or get anyone else to buy one for me. This I did, and never heard anything from them again. I then invested in a 16kw woodwarm, and can honestly say it is a league above the clearview in every respect, from quality of build through to customer service. My dealings with clearview, and from others that I have spoken to since, is that you are on your own if anything goes wrong. I would strongly urge you not to buy one.

  3. Can only comment on the change of use part of the question. We have had a similar issue with our farm within the last year. We were approached by the local council regarding our firewood sales from our farm buildings ( delivery only to customer, no retail ) The result being we have had to apply for change of use on our buildings. We have successfully gained B2 and B8 industrial use on them for our firewood operation, and have business rates to pay on the specific sheds and polytunnels that we use for it. The acid test from the planning point of view is does the wood that you are selling originate from your own property, or does it get brought in. If the wood originates from off site, then the conversion and selling becomes an industrial process, and not an agricultural / forestry operation. I think there are very few firewood operations who solely use / sell firewood from their own land, and from this I think it fair to say that most firewood yards work outside of the law regarding planning permission. Dont assume that what you are doing is right and legal because there are other local firewood merchants doing the same without any problem. On a sensitive site, it might not work, especially if you have to supply transport statements etc to justify how wood arrives and exits your site, and how the noise of converting it can / will affect any neighbours quality of life.

  4. I have around 4 weeks work in the winchester area, clearing small / medium trees. I will be starting next monday, september 3rd for approximately 2 weeks, then the other couple of weeks later in the autumn. Work will be snedding out trees and feeding my tracked timberwolf chipper, with a small amount of strimming. Chainsaw tickets a must, ideally with own saw. You will be working alongside myself, and willingness / ability to work a must. Please email me on [email protected] if keen. I am based in Devon and have staff I can call on to carry out work, but was wondering if there was anyone local who fancied the work. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

  5. Regarding planning permission for selling logs. It is a situation we have just gone through. We bought an ex council farm 4 years ago, ie a farmhouse, about 15 000 square feet of buildings and 8 acres. I have run my tree surgery business since 1986 and sold logs since then from my previous yard about 4 miles away. Following a call to the local council from a neighbour, we had a visit from the planning enforcement officer who established that we needed B2 and B8 industrial for our firewood business, one being necessary to cut the logs up, the other to store the firewood prior to selling. It has taken us about 7 months to gain the planning, and we now pay business rates on our buildings. The acid test was do we bring the timber in from ground we dont own to process and sell. The answer to 99 % of the people who sell logs is yes. Most of the firewood sellers in the land would need planning permission to carry out there business if inspected by there local planning authority. Just because the neighbouring farmer already cuts up logs is not an indication that he does not need planning. My gut feel would be that the property is only big enough to live in, not carry out the business from.

  6. From memory, I think the maximum possible width on a single span tunnel is 28 feet, which is the width of the ones that I have erected. Beyond that, you need to go to a multispan, where the overall width can be as much as you want, albeit with central supports as opposed to clearspan.

  7. Just bought a pair of radio ear muffs at lidls today, came in today as one of there special offer items. £ 24.99. Also own a pair of husqvarna radio ear muffs, and rate the lidl ones better than the husky ones, and the lidl comes with three years warranty. For any one interested, suggest get them soon because they are likely to sell out in the next few days.

  8. i might be interested in that, im at Clare (suffolk essex boarder) where is the wood?

Hi Ben, Had a quick look at your website. There seems to be the letter u missing in the word countryside on the opening page, but could have been worse. You might have missed out the letter o in countryside instead ! Made me laugh.

  9. Have just been served with a planning contravention notice and was wondering if there was anyone out there who has been placed in a similar position. Am a tree surgeon with a small farmyard, with an agricultural holding number, totalling about 40 acres over 3 blocks of land. Since last year, have increased the volume of firewood that I sell. I now dry our own processed logs down in 2 polytunnels, and buy in some pre-processed / dried timber for immediate resale. Nobody is employed in the firewood side of the business, and any chainsaw work is kept to a minimum. On saturday was served a planning contravention notice, giving me 21 days to respond to questions raised about specific work I carry out. The notice is served on me because of " Unauthorised change of use of land and buildings from agriculture to a mixed use of B2 ( log sawing place ) and B8 storage ( namely the storage of timber / logs ). Just wondered if any of you have been in a similar situation, and what the outcome was.

  10. Have decided to sell my petersen swing blade sawmill. Bought new in 2003, and done less than 50 hours from new. Dry stored and immaculate. 10 inch cut, 24 hp honda engine with all extras. £ 7250 + vat. Only for sale due to lack of use. May consider px for good used palax combi or hakke pilke oh60 firewood processor. Email [email protected] or 07768 791084. Based in devon. Also have farmi ch260 pto chipper for sale at £ 3250 + vat.

  11. May potentially have 5 - 6 weeks rail work on various small sites devon / dorset / hampshire. Basic chainsaw tickets needed but p.t.s. ESSENTIAL. Please dont ask to be trained for your p.t.s. as this will not be possible. If needed, work will start late march, for up to 6 weeks. I am based near cullompton, so will be leaving from here each day, but may suit someone east of me if they can make there own way to sites. Contact me for more details, including what your day rate will be.

  12. If i had 100t+ of roaside ash cordwood, nr Sidmouth Devon, @ £55.00 per ton, would there be any takers? (purely market research)

If you were to charge £ 47 / ton delivered in to cullompton, I would take the lot. You are charging about £ 17 / ton over and above its value, but its yours to sell and you can ask what you want for it. Time will tell.

  13. Kev, From personal experience I would stay well away from a clearvew stove. Bought one back in 1997, had it installed by the local approved installer and had great problems with it that winter. The flat top buckled so much that it was possible to see the flames inside the fire when sat watching it. Simon at clearview was one of the most arrogant individuals I have ever come across. He refused to rectify the problem under the warranty. The only solution he offered me was to take the woodburner out, return it to the factory at shropshire, and he would refund my money, only if I signed a document to state that I would never again buy a clearview stove again ( no chance of that happening ) Bought a woodwarm stove in the summer of 1998, and can honestly say it is the best product I have ever owned. When installing it, I would guess it to be 50% heavier than the clearview, and that the whole engineering and quality of build is superb. Recommend without hesitation to anyone.
