  2. I think you will be well under your limit with woodchip best thing to do Josh is load her up and take to your local weigh bridge/I did this when we first got our trailer we were choka with fresh felled hornbeam cord and I was thinking I would be well over but it only weighed in at 1.2 tonnes best for peace of mind and keeping it legal and all that! regards Essexlogman
  3. Hello Josh We usually just wrap around a tarpaulin and clip to the sides when the trailer is getting full we just fold back and attach the tarpaulin to create a half style roof to get a well full load in/ at some point I will get a custom made tarpaulin and frame/ this photo though is without but your idea about the thin sheeting and adding a half roof is a great idea Cheers Essexlogman
  4. Hey Josh you pays your money and you take your choice! sound like you got a good deal but I think the main point though is the chipping into the trailer we have been using this system for about 4 years now, and opted for the old Ifor tt85g bought new from gt towing it was in stock and available for immediate collection we use it behind a shogun also being an 8X5 is about the same width as the car and is great for both log deliveries and our tree surgery where as you can get right to where you need to chip or tip logs "access prevailing of course" either leaving the trailer on site subject to being secure or just pop back and get the chipper also another point is the weight carrying issue, we can carry up to 1.9 tonnes legally even if the shogun is fully loaded you are still talking 1.4 to 1.5 tonnes of legal weight carrying something I think the Crew cab guys might be interested in as you are looking at about as little as a half tonne capacity in those transits for us it is a good working system Enjoy your new trailer Cheers Essexlogman Tree surgeon Essex with New Hall Farm tree care
  5. We came across this magnificent specimen whilst working in one of our clients gardens and would be interested to see if anyone can guess what species we have here cheers!
  6. Hey thanks for that and pretty much agree with what you say and some great info in your links that I will be delving into more later Cheers Essexlogman!!!!!!
  7. Sound like you got your potatoes in at just the right time as we planted our earlies about a month ago and they were doing fine about 8 inches out of the ground and had been earthed up lightly a couple of times but they got caught by the frost in chilly Essex this weekend just gone and are looking seriously wilted and blackened Oh well onwards and upwards our tomatoe and cucumber plants are doing well as are our runner bean plants these are inside a greenhouse happy planting and cheers from Essexlogman
  8. Hello Carpenter1 I am no expert at charcoal making but if you are after having a bit of fun and not taking it to seriously then if you pretty much follow what i did in my original thread above in time you will end up with your own charcoal at not to much initial cost at all, also I just used a clay pot over the chimney to restrict the air and make sure all your firewood is well alight before you start to restrict the airflow "trial and error and all that" but if you want to take things to a commercial level I see a lot of replies and threads that you might find useful, also try the village idiot AKA graham as he has a retort kiln Good luck and let me know how you got on Cheers Essexlogman!!!!!!!
  9. After sampling the delights of fine quality locally produced charcoal on our BBQ for the last few decades I decided to have a go at making some charcoal my self and thought how hard can it be!!!! so bought myself one of those cheap metal incinerator dustbins "you know the type" with the chimney in the top and air holes in the base, so I dug a hole kept the earth to one side to restrict the air flow and all that, duly filled said charcoal producing machine with kindling and some of our driest hornbeam firewood logs and lit them and then closed down all the air ways thinking great will have a load of charcoal to use in the morning needless to say "wrong" it was a complete disaster and I ended up with a lot of black wood, anyway after much fettling and a lot of trial and error and to cut a very long story short I was finally succesfull in ending up with enough charcoal for our first BBQ, I ended up using two bags of kiln dried birch logs to get one BBQ's worth of charcoal not my most profitable venture but a dam fine barbeque none the less and a lot of fun and my deep respect to anyone out there who is involved in "the Black Art" of charcoal production Cheers Essexlogman!!!!!!!
  10. The Rialto bridge in Venice used "alder piles" ten Venetian feet long, driven down to the buon terreno (good ground), according to Antonio del Ponte in 1588, seems they have lasted pretty well so maybe as Venice is apparently sinking they might need a few replacement piles? might have to wait a few centuries for any repeat business though!
  11. Also Jimi Hendrix guitar was made of this so can not be that bad! on a firewood note though burns great when properly dry and has a fantastic aroma and is seriously under rated IMO
  12. Ben We are interested in the hornbeam contact at 07990 798434, any cord always considered in and around Chelmsford and Essex area Thanks & regards Paul
