  1. hi all, has anyone got any tips for drying out wood before/after carving to reduce splitting? ive been using some big old oak,too practise on, thats been down for about 5 years, finding that its splitting alot once left finshed, as ever, all advice is greatly appreciated, too anyone thinking of trying some carving; have a go, its great fun. be very careful of kickback zone, you only need some imagination, i cant draw anything whatsoever but the carvings are getting better. cheers all
  2. that'll be nice when a bearing shell cracks!!
  3. if your looking at keeping it for a while bear in mind that canter's arent very reliable once they get a few miles on them, & part prices are absurd, i have a customer who has 3 of them, i make him purchase all the parts so he cant suspect me of bumping the prices up!! cabstars are good as far as reliability goes, have you thought about other makes at all?? not much in the weight range i know, sprinters are rare but worth considering, ldv isnt a contender!! transits can be troublesome. avoid 2000-2002-gearboxes/axle problems, renault, citreon & vauxhall really are bad, fiat is no go either!! cabstar or sprinter then!! if you do lots of motorway miles then go sprinter, ideally 110-130 bhp, but they are rare, cabstar may well be your best bet, cheers
  4. a lotof m.o.d. landys were fitted with tachos, may be worth searching e bay for tacho head, speed sensors etc, i was talking to a vosa inspector about this recently, forestry rules are still a big 'grey' area very simalar to recovery vehicles rules, a couple of things to bear mind i think, if your vehicle is fitted with tacho, you need 6 year calibration & 2 yearly check done, driving regulations then come into play with statutory driving breaks etc, perhaps more importantly is the need to hold an operators licence, another can of worms!!!!!! one thing that i know people have got away with is delivering goods for 'family members' i.e. its no longer for hire or reward!! worth trying if you do get stopped, im unsure about other parts of the country but vosa do carry out roadside checks in the southeast over the weekend, good luck to you all
  5. looks like you guys did a great job. has your iveco got diff locks/cross locks? if not you can convert them if you can find one in a breakers yard, bit time consuming but worth it,
  6. its oak [i think!!] the peice of wood i found in the log pile helped towards its end shape, a piece of trunk that had already had 2 big limbs cut off at the right sort of angle! i kinda had an idea how i wanted it but the rest came from sheer luck i think, i was worried about making 1 cut too big so i trimmed lots of little bits until i ended up with this!! im pleased with it, waiting for a quiet day to start the next 1 now!!! cheers
  7. meant to ask, any idea how much i could charge for this type of thing? had lots of people showing interest, having read other posts im trying to avoid the 'buy me a pint' situation!!! cheers all
  8. hi all, thought i'd post my first carving, im hoping ill get quicker as this took me 6 hours!! [ with lots of tea breaks!!] whats best to use for burning the wood for shading etc? i tried oxy/acetolene but only have a huge cutting torch so that was a bit much!! then tried diy type blowlamp but that was too slow!! all advice as ever is greatly appreciated
  9. hi all, im currently repairing/restoring my late grandfathers chainsaws & wondering if anyone can help with a couple of bits? 051av, o75av & 076av, ive got them all running, the 51 doesnt have a chain brake, is this how they were or has it been removed? there are no holes in the clutch cover for a brake linkage, the 75 ive used with 36" bar but at full revs it 'misfires' although misfire is perhaps wrong word, the revs arent consistant, there up and down on full throttle, the 076 runs great but is a little difficult to start when hot, all 3 of these saws seem to not rev as hard as i thought they should, is this how they are? any advice would be greatly appreciated, i understand that these saws are getting on a bit now, but they will only be used occassionly for keeping the woodshed topped up!!! many thanks rob
