  8. Thanks for that David Yes, I agree. A big shame though!
  9. Thanks for all your help in identification. The actual picture is taken from google images so is not exactly the item in question however it was the closest likeness at the time. I went to the location of the tree yesterday and took a sample. I have included a photo of it here. I don't think it is chicken of the woods. The fungi is only on the ground at the base of the tree. To answer your question David, the crown is looking quite sparse and for this time of year I would still expect it to be in full leaf. Please see other photo of the crown of the tree where you can easily see the contrast. Also, there are quite a few lower dead and black branches. The owner also said that this years mast was down by 50% on last year. Would this also be a tale tail sign that the tree is infested/in decline? The tree is located in a school grounds so many targets. With this in mind and with such obvious visible presence of parasitic fungi instinct is telling me that the tree should be managed in a way as to lessen the bulk of the crown and so a heavy reduction is required. Am I on the right track?
  10. Hi all Please can someone help me with this bad boy? Looking at the photos that David Humphries has put up on the fungi directory it looks like a Meripilus Giganteus but I'm no expert in this and so could really do with a trained eye and expert opinion. It is all around the base of a large beech tree. If it is MG what are the chances of the tree being windthrown? Is it parasitic? I have heard that some fungi are symbiotic with trees - is this the case with this one? Thanks for your help.

  16. Hi Mark Did you ever sort the problem out with your father in laws MS180 because I also have a problem starting mine? Mine is very temperamental and pretty unreliable. I have only had it a couple of years and it has spent alot of this time out of action. Did you check the piston as suggested by one of the other members?
  17. Hi Mesterh and other contributors Thanks for getting back to me. I am using the right file - 4.8mm on a stihl (0.325 pitch) file holder. Also, I have been filing to the correct angles - 30, 85 and 10 up I will try and send some photos. Maybe it is because I am using a stihl file holder?? Would Oregon and Stihl file holders differ in depth? Could this be why I am not getting a hook on the side plate? one more thing.....can anybody tell me is a micro chisel the same as a semi-chisel chain? Thanks and much appreciated.
  18. Hi there I run an oregon bp22 micro chisel chain on a 15in bar on an ms260 chain saw. Unfortunately, on occasion I have hit something other than wood and damage has occured to the working corner and side plate. After having attempted to sharpen the cutters using a 4.8mm round file in a 3/16 (0.325") file holder the side plate has got worse and instead of being 85 degrees it is more like 90 or 95 degrees. The top plate angle is fine and I seem to be getting the working corner back to being sharp but the side plate angle remains at a right angle. Also, I have been holding the file holder 10 degrees pointing upwards and I am getting wear to the drive link which doesn't look right. Can anyone help? Has anyone else had a similar experience? Thanks
  19. Yes, according to H&SE you are supposed to carry out refresher training in all held units every three years for professional use or five years for occasional use. I will check out Kingswood. Thanks
  20. Hi there all Can anyone please suggest some individuals/companies that are well renowned for quality NPTC refresher training. The units I wish to take are CS30, 31, 32, 38, 39. Preferably London or somewhere South East England. Thanks
