  1. Don't know what all the fuss is about. I've been logging for the past week it's -11C and i just get on with it.

If people can afford to go away at Christmas then good for them.

The only thing I think needs changing is daft buggers who drive too fast on icy roads and create a 2 hour delay because they caused a stupid accident

  2. Hi Guys

were a relatively new company in the arb world.

Things seem to have gone a bit quiet on the tree front.

Our landscape gardening side is v busy apart from the frozen ground slowing us down a bit.

Im not sure if im quoting a bit high on jobs, we seem to convert about 2 in every 10 enquiries. But dont get many enquiries in the first place. I have tried postcards in shops, local newsletters and regional papers but getting very few hits.

Ive got a really keen ticketed lad who I want to keep busy and hope he doesnt lose interest.

Any one else got any ideas how we can find more work?

    Cheers Nick

You also have to think of adapting what skills you have.

Set up in log sales for next season.

Buy in timber if you have to.

Kept me busy from Dec - Feb this year and am now close to selling out of firewood.

Things go up and down in this game. Have heart, those that don't give up will win.........eventually!

  3. What is the assessment and pass criteria for CS30? Was the assessor asleep? I think you will find that the criteria for BASIC cross cutting is of a smaller diameter than what you have given the lad.

I would not have left him to it. Rather, watched him do the first few cuts and then when satisfied, let him carry on.

Personally, think it's your fault not the lad.

Give him support and encouragement. IMO it was a lack of his confidence in cutting large diameter timber

  4. Had this e-mail today.

    Dear John,

My name is Elena Prokop and I am representing a Russian wood-processing company which produces and sells in the Russian Market birch fire-wood. We sell about 4000 cub.m. per month.

Our wood has the following characteristics:

    Length 35-40 cm

    Width 8-15 cm

    Internal humidity 18-25%

Packed into pallets 1200*800 cm, volume 2 cub.m

We would like to offer you our wood delivered up to your compound. One truck contains 34 pallets or 68 cub.m. We could supply up to 60 trucks monthly. Terms of payment at the day of receiving the goods.

Please let me know if you’re interested in our offer and I will tell you the price and whatever else data you might need.

    Best regards,

Would be interested in looking at the price of a load.

Prices please delivery to Middlewich Cheshire.

    Please send photos of product

    Dear John,

We are just starting with British market and regarding price we could offer 60 pounds per cub.m. with included delivery to the point you have indicated.

Even if this wouldn't be interesting for you please let me know your opinion and price suggestions. If the price is viable for you I will send you the pictures in response

    Thank you in advance,

    Elena

  5. John I take it that this is the same outfit that is putting out cheap quotes ?

Hes been around near me a fair bit lately but hes to cheap . Same guy that had a school boy directing traffic the other day ? Climbs in rigger boots

    Yes Paul you are correct

  6. I wouldn't let it bother you, your price for 3 blokes & the kit sounds about right to me,the other guy must be hard up for work if he is doing it for £200.

That's the problem. Undercutting is not good, but you can't win em all. I pride myself on being professional, clean and recommended for my work.

Only problem it's getting quiet on the tree work here.

  7. Without seeing the tree, I cant say, but I was undercut on a £150 job today!!!! Not worried as i am snowed under with work, but I would have normally put a couple of hundred on this one, but was for an OAP friend of a friend.

Some people must have little or no overheads!!

Client actually told me he thought £450 was a fair price! I gave him a discount!

He was talked into the cheaper way I think. However we will see the state of the job over the next few days
