Type in "distel hitch" into google images and you should see the knot, sorry don't have a picture myself. I know a couple of guys that use it and sware by it. Use the Icicle myself.

Hi DBG. I would recommend going for it with SAC if possible. I did it a few years back with them, great course. I take it you've spoken to Matt Cooper as they were advertising a course this year. I'm sure others on here will have some suggestions to get you sorted.

You could try sticking a Kongskklde cyclone on the end of your chipper. Farmers use them for grain blowing, it will take the air out the system and drop the chip onto the trailer.

Fell & replant, you've already admitted there's a problem with the tree and that's how a court of law will look at it if, it ever came to that. Remember this is a school and these are peoples sons and daughters which could (heaven forbid) be affected. I would try to preserve a tree where possible but not here.

SWB can you pm me dealer details, would'n mind having a look myself.

Tom you could try Pentland Plants at Loanhead, they are in the woodchip business but don't know if they take arb arisings. You could also try Jenkinsons at lockerbie.

Thanks guys, not a huge amount, about 3 days worth of chipping.

Does anyone on here know where I can get rid of chip from a job I've got near Haddington, East Lothian.

Go for it. I started at age 38, put myself through the training courses and set up my own business. I know I'm not the fastest climber but its my own time I'm working in so its not so important as it would be if I was working for someone else. I was lucky when I started as I met an experianced arborist who was looking for some help, learned a heck of a lot and even "branched out" into bat work. As Andy said its perhaps not the best time to start but hey, it just might be what you'r looking for. Good luck.

Thanks guys. Yes Ross it is unit 5. I know a couple of guys that have done it and it is quite hard but, as you say, good to have. Is there anyone amongst us who is surveying for power companys ?
-
I was thinking about doing the NPTC tickets for surveying power lines. Does anyone know if it would be worth it and is there any subby work available in Scotland.
-
I Know it's not tree work but these guys had real courage. Good sound track too imo.

Total waste of money, had it for a year and didn't get one call !! chuck a handful of cash in the fire and you'll get more benefit from it.

will try to be there

I'm Scottish as the name suggests.

SAC in Lanark run LOLER courses. You'r right you cannot assess your own gear' best to tie up with another assessor and do each others.

Did one a few years back for London zoo.
Cut logs approx 2 feet long & lay them in 2 parllel lines 2-3 feet appart to form 2 arch shaped piles. Then cut logs long enough to cover the arches to form something like a humpback bridge. The idea is that the logs decompose & the invertibrates like the dark warm space created in the pile, or at least thats what the boffins at the zoo said.

I use Trust & they seem to be OK

I,ve got a 2 stage power pack for sale if u know anyone that wants one.
Distell

I like the icicle, it grips well but probably not quite as free running as the distel, although I have 4 wraps on it as I'm a fairly big guy. Don't use a micro pully as I feel it's more clutter I can do without (or I'm just old fashioned).
