  1. Hi guys, i've got a customer who recently phoned to ask if the standing dead Walnut (dead for 6 months apparently!)in there garden would be worth anything once milled (trunk diameter in the region of 20 - 25" so i'm told).

I'm not sure myself, so anyone out there got any ideas if its worth doing and how much it could be worth?

I didn't actually see the tree when previously working at the property as the garden was pretty big and it was tucked away!

Its either take it down and ring it up, or try and do something with the timber!

    Cheers,

    Pete

    :thumbup1:

PM Rob D, he may be interested in milling it.

Or maybe not after the one he milled for one of my customers :blushing:

  2. On another point. Check the rated capacity of your trailers against your maximum allowed mass and towing capacity. If your rated capacity is 300okgs (Ranger, Rodeo) and your trailer is rated to 3500kgs - you are breaking the law even empty!

My local trailer sales place told me this has changed, and you can tow 3500kg gross trailer as long as it does not exceed 3000kg loaded? Not sure if thats true.

If over 3500KG train weight (truck/trailer combo) then you need a tacho unless you claim exemption- under 50km not driving for hire/reward. I checked with my local VOSA office- I am exempt for 'driving to a site with tools and driving away with a tree in the trailer' when i checked :)

Not sure about keeping milage records? Never heard of it, but i thought EVERYONE driving for work (even a car) need to have breaks/working hours the same as HGV drivers (45mins break every 4.5hours)?

Driver CPC- similar exemption if you are not 'driving for hire or reward'.

E.g. delivering logs with train weight over 3500kg you will need tacho and CPC!

  3. Agree with UKMINCH...you need to know what you can tow and carry legally as ignorance of the law is no defense...look on the Gov web site and that will help. But anyone who has not got a pre97 can tow a trailer (or chipper in most cases for you) up to 750kgs with a 3.5t transit and the MAM (maximum authorized mass) must not exceed 3.5 t... so transit empty and the chipper 750kgs say is 2900kgs (approx) that allows you to carry 600kgs...that needs to include yourselves ,tools etc...so might get 300kgs or 400kgs of woodchips etc... if you do your trailer test your towing capabilities increase but you must not exceed your MAM at any time...so think what you are towing with vehicle wise...hopes this helps a bit....

Pretty sure you can have 4250Kg train weight on a license with no trailer test- if its a 750Kg trailer...

the legalitys are even better than that IF the Trailer weight plate says 3500kgs MAM then the towing vehicle must also state that it is allowed to tow 3500kgs so you take a pick up rated to tow 3200kgs and put a trailer plated to 3500kgsMAM on the back you are illegal and un insured ! due to the fact the trailer has the potential ! there for you have to have the trailer derated on the weight plate !

My local ifor dealer told me last summer they had changed the rules so you can tow bigger. For example my L200 can only tow 2700Kg but could tow a trailer plated to 3500Kg as long as its laden weight never exceeds the 2700Kg... I have not confirmed it yet but he seemed to know his stuff...

I'm in need of getting a couple of guys through trailer test.

Any one have any experience of the training?

How long, where you did it, cost etc?

    appreciated

    What the others said.

But watch out for dodgy HGV training companies- I trained with one called AdvantageHGV and it was not a pleasant experience, I would recommend you avoid them and similar companies. Type the company name into google and look for 'reviews' before going ahead.

I have heard alot of people fail because you have to reverse and hitch up in one attempt! Watch bad habits like crossing hands- better to get out of the habit a week before the training so you can concentrate on learning more important stuff.

  4. ok thanks guys tbh i'm not old enough to do the HGV's, the info on the chipper towing is very helpfull! :)

Off the top of my head its 17 to do B+E (trailer license) 18 to do C1 (7.5ton truck no trailer) and 21 to do the others.

    Don't forget about tachographs....

    Charlie.

  5. Charlie at the time he did his it came ack with just the classes he had tested for ! and i know for a fact he did the c+e afterwards as we both ranted about it they may have changed stance but this was 6 7 years ago !

At the time we seamed miffed that you could take 44 tones of wagon and drag around but not a trailer over 750kgs behind a car lol !!!

Yes, the rules are ridiculous sometimes!

Reason i did HGV1 was because it meant i could drive anything (cost about £2000), just to do trailer test i was quoted about £1000, and apparently the test is harder!

  6. :confused1: Agreed the trailer thing is silly I can drive a tractor with a fully laden trailer only restriction is the trailer is no bigger than 2.5 metres wide! but i can't tow anything behind the landy its so frustraiting just keep on trying to bleed money out of you!!

You can tow 750KG, like a small chipper.

There is a complicated rule- something like you can tow 3500KG minus your landy's GVW (2400KG?) allowing you to tow 1100KG. as long as this does not exceed your UNLADEN weight. - Google it.

    Charlie.

  7. I don't think you are suppose to specify 'pre 97' in a job advert- age discrimination apparently!!

But it is perfectly fine to say 'must have C1+E driving license'.

Would you apply to drive HGVs and say its not fair because you don't have an HGV license?

Twistedhicap- are you sure about that? I did my HGV 1 and 2, and I definitely have B+E on my license. If you do a test, you are given all entitlements below that, e.g do a C test you get C1, do your C+E and you get C1+E and B+E.

  8. I'm young and insure a private 4x4 for business use.

CIS (or co-operative?) were half the price of everyone else for me AND the only company to offer me insurance to drive any vehicle third party!

Don't think NFU will help you till you are 25 unless a family member has insurance with them... stupid.

  9. I got a call today from a guy who has 2000 60/80 whips to plant as a hedge. He wants a price just to plant and guard with cane and spiral. He is supplying everything. I havent done whip planting for years and need to know the going rate at the moment. So any idea would be great. thanks

How many whips do you think 1 man can plant in a day?

  10. Tirfor T35 for sale, 3000KG SWL for lifting, about 5000KG pull I think. NO HANDLE.

Impulse purchase before christmas, I don't need a big winch and its a big old lump. I've not used it but seems to work fine. Not perfect condition e.g. couple of small kinks in rope, and the 'pin' at the rear for attaching to anchor point is missing. Comes with a yellow 3ton 'strop'.

    I can email pictures.

£80 no offers, cash on collection, you are welcome to come and test it. North essex/hertfordshire.
