  1. Hi all, In the current economic downturn, and wanting to keep my hand in with practical arboriculture/forestry, i was wondering if anybody knew of or had a small piece of woodland that required management, for a cheap day rate... I am willing to work cheap due to the fact that i simply wish to enjoy the peaceful benefits of doing a saturday/sunday a week working at my own pace and being left to my own demise...something about getting out into the woodland to fell trees, possibly make fence posts etc or clear an area for coppicing seems to appeal to me...if anybody knows of anything i'm defo interested... Thanks...
  2. Referring to comment above, known as 'Endophytic' fungi...they lie domrant/leitant within the tree until the correct conditions permit....all part of the natural recycling of the tree, see arborecology articles for more info...
  3. Recreational climbing is great fun, no pressures just grab your kit and find the biggest, most challenging climb you can...i am lucky enough to spend a few days a week at our offices which are situated within an old park land and hall, lots of big oaks, beech and wellingtonias... Make it fun by timing and racing others...
  4. Fantastic photo's, i have a small Fomes fomentarius in my office, but thats alot bigger then mine (no pun's please)....The link to the AIE website is a good start if you want to begin your knowledge of fungi, also try Roger Phillips, although he can get hectic, or ask santa to bring you 'Manual of wood ecay in trees' and/or 'diagnosis of ill health in trees' both very good and species specific... Hope that helps!
  5. Defo, sounds pretty cool, you will have to post more information when you have it regarding location, dates and times etc. I would be interested in entering the comp, is it going to be ISA style????? And you could try getting some below ground ecosystem/roots/simbiotic relationships beetweens fungi and tree etc talks, i know andrew cowan at 'Arborecology 'has started a conference/seminar on it, looked preety good, and interesting if you like that sort of thing.
  6. Hey guys... Thanks for the comments, we had a suspision that it may have been some kind of reactive growth in response to the ivy, as yes there were no bulges along the main stem. Have never seen it before though so thamks again...
  7. Hi all, Seeing as we are accompanied by so many budding and professionally enthusiastic characters on ArbTalk i was hoping someone may know what this picture represents? The pictures demonstrate a sample/branch of a Norway Spruce in a private garden, one of a cross section. A number of the branches have this defect (if it is) and became evident after removing a dense coverage of ivy.... Any ideas or answers would be most appreciated.... Thanks...
  8. Pholiota mushrooms have an abundance of irregualr scales, almost tuft like in appearance, along the cap and stem giving them a shaggy appearance. I sent a picture to Roger phillips last week which i belived to be pholiota and he assured me they were, so could be worth a try. They were the same colour as those shown above, yet had these irregualr scales. Liitle is known about the fungus, accept it is attributal to a root disorder...commonly on ash...
  9. I would say that if a dead wood saprophyte is present on the roots/root collar that it is likely that some decay is present, and that a 'ring' would suggest the roots within the upper proportion of the soil may have been affected. This could be an issue within a high target area. Were the mushrooms of sulphur tuft for sure? But suggestions would be to monitor, possible further inspection through air spading etc, depending on client budget etc, or to carry out remedial treatment if you feel neccessary i.e. reduce wind loading or crown weight.... Hope that helps...
  10. Depending on where in London, although i prefer treeworker, i do know that Honey Brothers will allow you to take a swing in a harness, which is a trip down the A3 but not to far out of the way. We have a Skylotec at work and i personally think its pretty awful, the back support is it's saving grace...very chunky harness. I currently climb using the Treemotion by Treevolution, awesome harness for attachments, comfortable when working work positioned and has an adjustable attachment point on the front, which is now replaceable...The whole harness is adjustable which allows you to make it suit your needs, once messed around for a few hours. I have heard the Petzl Sequioa is a good harness and it seems the rock climbing stylie is in... Depends if you want style as well as comfort
  11. Well....slow at the mo, was hectic but the downturn in building has meant that the reports and surveys for B.S 5837 have slowed down. Have enjoyed it and contribute alot to bat inspections, through climbing, yet i'm hungry for more...the problem is we do veterans but not enough, no climbing, unless client states, to collect hard evidence and not enough general structural integrity tests. I want to push it but for such a big company its hard to get heard.... Hows u?
  12. Some good points...It is a fair comment to say that the TPO is weak when it comes to protecting vets. I have had a lot of recent discussion with the LA regarding vet's on land for development and have tried to argue their protection through any means, providing it does not conflict with H+S to members of the public, as this should be, in my opinion, a strong consideration. Good to hear from you Treasure....
