So this film was on the telly the other night. An incredible feat by a world leading athlete. Genuinely cringey at times, (in a good way, nail biting stuff).
BBC iPlayer - Free Solo

Solo climber Alex Honnold prepares to achieve his lifelong dream of scaling El Capitan.I like the fact that the ground crew whilst filming couldn't watch at certain points.

Yes you are overthinking this, but it means that you are not being blaise about the risks.
Getting the tree hung up means that you won't get a shower of dead wood being pinged back at you when a felled tree falls through the canopy.
Make sure your escape roots are clear and crack on. Once you have delt with a few, you will get a feel for it.
Or get a 6-8 tonne digger in.

The base of the tree doesn't seem to get damaged by fire unless the fire actually burns it. Most of the damage is done when radiant heat breaks down the proteins in the cambium and the characteristic pattern of necrosis tends to look like an assegai spear blade, broadly curved at the base and tapering out at the top
Good analogy

If it was fire damage , i would expect to see alot more damage to the base of the tree to correspond with the levels of damage higher up. I don't think squirrels like horse chestnut, so i would be heading for some form of canker, or kids

If you fancy a road trip out west, i have a couple of Beech stems that are 10' long and about 24" top diameter.

I have 4 sets of the Stihl pro comms for about 18 months.
Despite a very wet winter they are still working fine
The noise reduction means you can talk next to a running chipper and be heard by all.
The only thing that lets them down is the stupid visor mount.

So for a 40 hour week a climber can look at getting paid around £125 a day paye.
I'm sure wage's are going backwards.
Thats less than i pay my experienced ground workers.
@AA Teccie (Paul) that doesn't put our industry in a very good light.

Its been a while, but you lucky people can have the pleasure of another gripping video from the Hairy Fool. You might have to pause it half way through, because it might be just too exciting...............
Enjoy

True but lazy cutters that don't keep up with new kit and rules are rare in my experience.
I certainly will not be paying for training and will continue to work.
Like you say it's an advisory not a copulsary requirement.
Whether you are a felling God or not, we all pick up bad habits, and it Is good to be reminded of said bad habits.
I wouldn't employ someone who didn't want to do the refresher.
One refresher every 5 years costs you pence a day.

Learn to say no. As a subbie you will be brought in to deal with dangerous/ difficult trees that they don't want to do.
Always ask questions, you will be amazed at what gems you pick up from the most unexpected sources .
Don't take on debt unless you are very sure.

Have to say I feel D- for execution is a tad punitive considering the baw exposure risk from lunging in such an exposed aerial position, when the crotch gave way he had seconds to avoid a custodial sentence!
But it doesn't get away from the fact, it was piss poor lunge
