It isn't a larvae. It is a sock puppet I made for my youngest boy, it fell out of my bag at your house.

The thing was still alive and heading North when I caught it. I'll wager it's other half it's lying there dead in your rucksack.

It's the larva (technically not a caterpillar) of a (elephant ?) hawk moth.
