  1. We took down a couple of big trees yesterday including a big ash tree, the top half was more rotted than we expected, but the bottom half was good and will hopefully make some good logs. The trees were in a friends field with nothing around them so they were dropped in one piece to the ground. we used our vintage tractors to cart the logs and handle the bigger pieces i wanted to take some more pics but never got chance that is our david brown 880, handling one of the bigger pieces, made it alot easier to cut up when it was off the floor. thats my massey ferguson 35 and our new trailer, just tipping some of the pieces another pic of our db with my dad on it, that piece of ash was a fair weight but the db lifted it with ease, i was very surprised. tipping a load of poplar ash and anothers before we could go off and get cracking again.
  2. Im looking to obtain my cs30+31 at some point this year, i live in burton on trent in the midlands, looking on the nptc site base @ penkridge seems about the closes/best choice for me. I just wondered if anyone has been there recently and could tell me what its like? i think for both courses and assessment it costs around £640, is that about the going rate? i believe you have to take your own gear, a chainsaw with a 15" bar, is the correct? Many thanks mark
  3. Love this county, what model is it?
  4. Thanks We use at the minute, what u would probably call mickey mouse 2 stroke oil, what does everyone else use? and where is the best place to buy it from? do you use single shots or large containers? also, how for round on the chain oil dial for the 48" bar, how far past the (e) marking??
  5. Morning We used our ms880 with the 48" bar+chain for the first time today, we cut a large ash tree which had fallen in the gales into large slabs to transport behind one of the tractors and trailers, i havnt used such a large chainsaw for a few years and that one was well used and worn, i couldnt believen how poweful and effortless this new saw is, sounds lovely at full revs aswell. Only managed to take one pic, got my new truck stuck, shouldnt have attempted it anyway, was loaded up with slabs of poplar + saws and the field is a flood plain so had to use one of our fergies to pull me free. how embarrassing couple of questions 1 - can you get a rollermatic 48" bar? reason i ask is because the one supplied is a non roller, does the rollers make much difference? our 25" bar is a rollermatic. 2 - chain oil - when using the 48" bar what amount of chain oil should we be using? book is not very clear, i ran it high but wondered what it should be on, book says run on e (ematic) guess it should be higher for longer bar. 3- whats the ideal fuel mixture? again book is not very clear, presume this saw has a cat so that is 50:1 ?? 4 - i have no experience of climbing, i intend to go on some courses and also learn from professionals but in the mean time i woould like to study a book on climbing, can anyone reccomend one?? i see on tree source there is The Tree Climber's Companion £11 or Tree Climber's Guide 3rd Ed £30 to name a few, which would benefit me most?? Still looking to gain some proper experience if any tree surgeons want a hard working part time apprentice in the burton on trent and surrounding - please contact me we are cutting the slabs of ash into logs on saturday so will take some more pics then there is some other pics on our website http://fergusont20.googlepages.com many thanks Mark
  6. Thanks im struggling to find him on there, does he have a website?
  7. Hello, love the website My names Mark, im 25 and from burton on trent in the midlands. I have been operating a chainsaw for around two years now, i have been felling small scale trees with family members( no experience of ariel work) and cutting and selling logs, i have no qualifications though, i would like to gain some experience and possibly qualifications. Im not sure what to do though, tree surgery really interests me and im a really hard worker, i work four days on four days off so could offer a local company a couple of days a week so i could gain some proper experience. I cant afford at the minute to give up my full time job, regarding courses there is a local company to me called base its probably well known on here, i believe its on the edge of cannock chase. Would i be best starting there on some courses such as cs30 31 and then progress? my family is ex farmers, we collect, restore and operate vintage tractors and implements including sawbenches. my web address with loads of pics and info if anyone is interested http://fergusont20.googlepages.com any local companies looking for some part time help?? Thanks Mark
