Laying off centre (only about 9") 'single brush' style makes laying easier next time round as the new stems come straight up and not such a rats nest. Lower hedges and double brush hedges laid into the centre are typical of arable or sheep farms. I've laid a few Midlands style hedges over the years and only a few jobs actually had a ditch to work with. Probably because these days more work can be found laying garden, country park, urban and other amenity hedges than on cattle farms. Looks proper good when the ditch is cleaned at the same time as the hedge is laid though.
