I was told by a commercial sawyer that you should change the band when you start getting the feathery swarf in the back of the blade, i usually push on and get a bit more done till i feel a difference in cutting speed

That's what budgets are for; spending. If clients decided not to 'get rid of' their budgets nobody would be working.
I fully understand the concept of budgets
my comment was meant to be slightly tongue in cheek, I’m sure a far better value for money option would have been available rather than having two people, a skid steer and chipper onsite for a day for what is essentially 20mins work with a tractor and moderately sized heizohack

That must be on its knees with the rotator too? The grapple on its own is a lump with my 1.8t. Although well matched with rotator to the 2.7t.
maybe I’ll try the rotator too on the little machine!
not at all, it handles the weight very well

Be interested to see that alongside the 2.7 ton bobcat, trade off in capacity v weight. Looks a tidy little job though...
my mates got the 2.7 so i’m sure it’ll be alongside it at somepoint. this machine will go through a 1m gap.

A fella I’m working with this week has been lusting after exactly this set up near enough. Would you mind sharing cost of machine and grapple etc? Happy to do so over DM if you prefer.
looks ace!
20k for the machine and 2.7k for the grab

a little bobcat e19 equipped with tiger grip grapple for the smaller jobs it’s not worth taking a bigger machine to, plus it’s easy for the guys to take behind a truck without maxing out the towing capacity. twin auxiliary hydraulics on proportional rollers so no messing about with diverter valves. tidy mesh guard to protect the front screen
not used it in anger yet but i’m sure it’ll prove to be a handy addition replacing my old yanmar which has gone to retire on my small holding

JCB 86c I specced a couple of years ago still going strong despite working 5.5 days a week in a Transfer Station and other duties when required.
Surprisingly stable over the side I found when pouring concrete with it with 3ft bucket on backwards and this was specced with the longest arm.
You can pick these up right money and apart from paint, nothing to be scared of and buckets etc easily sourced as it’s all JCB 3cx.
Eddie.
the paint job on the counter weight is great

Full package here that won’t take a genius to work out I had a fair bit of influence when being converted.
The 118mr is something you don’t see that often used, and pack some serious hp, plus a good size cab in what’s virtually an 8 tonner size.
Done virtually nothing since being gone through by John Craig, with the 700mm pads setting it off nicely.
This is what I call a full fat Ec-Oil setup, with Twin Blocks giving maximum flow to attachments, and the Ec214 is equipped with the Hi Flow swivel.
No messing about with changeover switches on this, it’s full Control System.
Comes with Rake and Steel log as we nicknamed it that clip onto the blade when not in use, but are incredibly effective at clear up or woodchip levelling in combination with the grab by using the pockets to grip them.
Buckets are a bit of an all sorts, but plenty to get going
with.

hi eddie
could you run a mulcher beneath the engcon? or would it be a case of taking the engcon off to run the mulcher?

My sympathies are not with your customer in this instance, it's your livelihood. At least you'll get some comfort after a look over by Fuelwood at least. Fingers crossed its limited to blades and holders.
i’d already picked out a load of other bits of metal from the pile as i was going along, absolutely no care taken by the lads felling and stacking the trees. surprising really as they used to own there own heizo

Ouch, that was a substantial lump. Awful feeling when you hear the sound of metal on metal coming from your chipper. My big worry is if something big enough got in that it could damage main rotor or bearings. I shudder to think of that repair bill.
i’ve got fuelwood coming out monday to give it the once over, not worth causing any more damage if there is a problem
the guy i was chipping for was very perturbed when i told him i wasn’t chipping anymore
hell be even more pissed when he gets the repair bill

Running a T213 with Kesla crane and a Heizo 14-800:
Doing mainly site clearance so material is bulky but not heavy work like roundwood for biomass
4 hr minimum charge up to 20 miles away
8 hr minimum thereafter
Approx £40 per hour travel
Approx £120 per hour operating
Low loader at cost plus 1 hour to load/unload
I also charge for a full set of blades if steel goes into machine, am flexible on this, a nail or piece of barbed wire is within reason, a telegraph pole with steel climbing pegs not so much (managed to back that out in time)
i’ve been charging £80 an hour wether it’s travelling or chipping. minimum charge of 8hrs
i also charge for blades if metal goes through the chipper but also charge if other parts are damaged at the same time, todays client will get the bill for 5 blade holders at £185 each and a set of blades
this was what went through today, no idea what it is

After running crane fed chippers and roofmount tractors for the last 4-5 years with 3 different chippers and 3 different tractors i still find myself questioning my rates for this equipment.
what do people charge hourly for a crane fed chipper and tractor? obviously combinations of both affect pricing so currently i’m running a heizohack 8-400k behind a valtra t163 with 8m crane.
I also bill for 8hrs minimum per day to include travel unless the gear needs to go on a low loader in which case it’s 8hrs minimum plus low loader cost
cheers

i’ve got the milwaukee impact gun, grinder and grease gun. very pleased with them, not used any others to compare but i’d certainly buy again

Well explained mate, and nice work.
How are you getting on with the extra cab Hilux?
Thats’s what I fancy next.
i’m very pleased with mine mark, the boys take the hilux and smaller chipper out over the mog most days for smaller jobs

Is there anywhere localish in the north west (I'm Burnley and Skipton area) that takes g30 etc biomass chip that needs drying?
I'm just looking to make more income from produce at the yard. If I was to get a cone splitter for a bigger digger and say a 12" heizo. Chip my wood and cart it off to sell?
These artics pay peanuts for a low grade product to them (average woodchip leaf etc)
Is this a goer?
I send quite a bit off in big lumps. Next person cracks them up and chips them then sells on from there. Was wondering if there's an angle for me In this process some where.
How much a cube is the end product?
Cheers
if you have a use for the kit outside of producing some biomass chip i’d say go for it
i have a cone splitter and a heizohack, mainly for my own work and a bit of contract chipping. there’s a biomass place down the road that buys my whole tree, arb and round wood chip. it makes a nice little addition to a day to run a load of chip in if we finish early or if there’s no need for me to be onsite. i wouldn’t base my justification for having the kit on that reason though because at somepoint it’ll all go pop
personally i’d get the next size up heizo if i was you

i’ve got a stack of milling timber in my yard that i cut on my bandsaw for jobs around the place
the reality of it is, is that a lot of timber isn’t that good so now i only save the decent or exceptional stuff and chip everything else
chip pays the bills and allows me to save some stuff for my own use like gate posts etc around home
