Stihl Filing Kit

I have a little experience of sharpening, mostly using the Oregon Professional Filing Guide.

I have not found this easy to use in that it is difficult to clamp at the correct height, and also pushing the file forwards with a steady sideways pressure is a problem.

I was wondering if the Stihl Filing Kit would be better for me.

Can anyone who has used the file holder and the file gauge recommend them or otherwise?

Does the file holder keep the file at the correct height?

Does anyone go along with the suggestion from 'Vertical Lmit" to use a file one size smaller than that given by the manufacturer?

Thank you.

I prefer the roller filing guides personally, they just sit over the tooth. Filing seems to be a very personal thing, some preferring the roller guides, others the guides that clip to the file, then some use no guides at all. So long as you get the right results its not important. And yes when the chain is getting worn down switch to a file one size down. And dont forget to take down the depth gauges when sharpening too!
