Can anyone help or has anyone seen these bark patterns before? Sweet chestnut coppice in Kent. I've seen P.cambivora and chestnut blight before but I've never seen these concentric patterns. Any ideas? Cheers. ImageUploadedByArbtalk1459889035.397964.jpg.91b8bec6cd6b04b4615ebcce4a484687.jpg

I've seen this referred to on Walnut as the result of canker caused by Nectria galligena (Pirones Tree Maintenance). But I'd like to hear if someone has something more definite for Castanea.

Wouldn't rule out Phytophthora sp (perhaps get a testing kit)

But I wonder whether these may be some sort of target canker?

They appear mostly to be circular and around old branch/twig collars.

I suggest you log them on the Tree Alert website. There are a number of things affecting sweet chestnut and being in Kent it's close to the continent. You will need to reduce the file size of the photos to log it .
