i bought a kubota g18 for just over £2000 and its far better than any mountfield stuff in my view, spend the money now and it will reward you 10 times over during the cutting season....

Can't argue with that, but many used machines such as the Kubota G18 will be quite well used to be as cheap as that, and many will require a considerable amount spent on them to bring them up to standard.

I may have misunderstood the OP, but I rather thought he was talking about new machines, sorry if I got it wrong.

In the sub £2000 bracket you will have a job to get better value than a Stiga or Mountfield machine IMO, and I work on most makes so know them pretty well.

The Kubota was 10 years old with 1800hrs on it with full service history from a private owner, it was just luck to be fair to find one at that price and will probily never find one again, its just being at the right place at the right time.

As for new i quite like them john deers like the smaller x range x300 but not sure if you could get a new JD for the 2k mark tho? You'd be silly not to listen to Garden Kit for advice on new kit, ive only ever bought 2nd hand kit.

John Deere L145. £2000 new.

48" deck, 20hp v-twin engine, can mulch, side discharge or (optional item) collect in a pair of bags, even got cruise control.

I have had one for ten years and mows two acres a week, gives a superb finish and hasn't broken down. Easy to remove the deck, about 5 minutes, to sharpen blades. Just replaced the original ones last autumn. Gone through four vee belts in that time. The last time I fitted a £9 belt from ebay instead of the £50 JD one and it has lasted at least as long as the branded ones.
