Anyone know the going rate per ton for cutters and chokerman working with a skyline winch dragging whole trees? I know the price will differ with timber size but a rough price will do to get me started. Cheers.

If you asked how much for a beech dismantle in Surrey you would be snowed under with answers, they would out like fly's around a jam pot. Whereas the wilds of Glenbranter no one wants to know.

assuming the trees are about half a tonne each about £3 per tonne would be a fair price for felling only, if the trees a bigger than this you would probably need to cut off the first couple of sawlogs so the skyline can handle the trees up the hillside so £5 per tonne would suffice. But normaly contrators pay day rate so you can help with skyline setup and chockering etc.

Most of the cutting i done for contractors was a day rate.

And i got the same rate when felling for the skyline. i only done the felling never had anything to do with the skyline itself, often it was not on the job and i ws working well infront

Think the few folk that operate lines down here just pay the boys day rates and same rates as if cutting/brashing for harvester

Cheers for the replies, yeah I've always cut for hourly or daily rate myself but I'm setting up my own skyline crew and just wanted to see what piece work rate would work out at.

3 quid a ton sounds about right for cutting and I'm guessing chokering would be less than that?

I'm based in Argyll Stephen, who were you working for in Argyll?

Yeah I know the price will vary site to site but I think it would be a good way to do it as the winch is payed by the ton so when the winch is making decent money so are the cutters and chokermen. Sorry that should really be chokerpersons these days
