Never heard of a 540 having starting issues, had mine in the lock up for 6 weeks, put fresh fuel in and it started straight away.Hope you get it sorted, as you say its got great grunt-even when its nose is buried in the wood.

Oh it starts first time, it just seems to be after it's been running takes like 7-10 pulls to get going again! I've shelved it for the last few weeks but this conversation has spurred me on to strip it!! I'll give it a crack at the weekend.

I have a MS 261 a 2011 unit had it from new its worked very hard but i quess a lot of poor reports on stihl maybe come from a lot of poor maintenace

There seems to be consistant bad reports in the newer models with the electronic systems.Been some threads on these forums of late. Not good for stihls reputation espesially when dolmar and echo are getting great reviews on there saws.

My 540 started playing up restarting when warm, it took the spark arrester out and it seems to have fixed it for a year. I am however an echo convert and everything is slowly getting replaced with that stuff. The farty exhaust note of the 420es never fails to make me smile! I'm such a child.

Farty noises are always good for a giggle...
