If the tree has a fairly even canopy before you start work on it, and you want to retain that shape, you can get a feel for the sort of length you are taking off, and keep that in mind if you start to get lost, I found that really helped me anyway! Also getting nice and far out on the limbs can really help you to figure out what's going on.

Someone on the ground who cares about the end product can be the difference between a good day and a bad day!
