"Personally I cant see a tree that is say 40-50 years old and in good health failing due to poor planting. Surely if its planted poorly or hasnt developed a decent root system it would show long before it reaches a size that could be classed as a hazard."

Dont count on it!

"I would rather see trees planted with a 7 foot stake and a mesh guard than not planted at all. "

So would I mate....

the biggest problem we have in cheshire is that most La trees are in roadside verges and therefore fall under the management of the highways department who very rarely replace as that means future managment and maintenance. even if they do replace they rarely maintain them or protect them from the strimmer gangs.

Our LA is doing fairly well at replacing felled trees and even planting new ones where ever there is space :) Just last year a big sycamore split in half at a junction and had to be removed, within a year it has been replaced by a nice big Tulip tree that is doing great. They've also removed a mature beech in a public park that had a large cavity, the stump is still there, i'm eager to see what they replace it with.
